Biden, Trump, DeSantis, and the Politics of Social Security

The Republican for whom this issue could be extremely problematic is Governor Ron DeSantis...

In his State of the Union address last week, President Joe Biden departed substantially from the print version of his speech to concede that virtually no one in the Republican Party is currently proposing cuts in either Social Security or Medicare. In the print version of his speech released prior to the address, Biden said "some Republicans" are proposing such cuts, but in the actual remarks that he made he conceded "I'm not saying it's the majority." Also adding, "Other Republicans say " I'm not saying it's a majority of you, I don't even think it's even a significant " but it's being proposed by individuals. I'm not " politely not naming them, but it's being proposed by some of you."

This conciliatory back pedaling by Biden certainly removes the sting from his prepared remarks in which he said, "If anyone tries to cut Social Security, I will stop them. And if anyone tries to cut Medicare, I will stop them." The prepared remarks were clearly designed to set up the straw man of those evil Republicans planning to cut both entitlements. Perhaps it was the vocal eruption of House Republicans during his speech which caused the President to temper his remarks.

Considering that the Democrat Party has used the faux line of attack in every October every two years, it may be an actual recognition by Biden that President Donald Trump, who is still today Biden's most probable 2024 opponent, has adamantly opposed any proposal to cut either Social Security or Medicare his entire public career"even chiding Congressional Republicans on the issue prior to his ever becoming a candidate for Federal Office.

The Republican for whom this issue could be extremely problematic, however, is Governor Ron DeSantis"in both the Republican nominating process and, were he to get that far, in the 2024 election.

DeSantis voted for resolutions to cut Social Security and Medicare and to extend the retirement age to 70 when he was a member of Congress in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Given the average age of Republican primary voters, this is probably the Governor of Florida's greatest single vulnerability if, as expected, he moves ahead to announce his candidacy for President later this year.

FOOTNOTE: Under current Florida law, Governor DeSantis would be required to resign from State Office in order to become a formal candidate for Federal Office. Look to Republicans in the Florida Legislature to repeal this provision of law in an amendment to unrelated legislation later this year.

The President has very little to do with Social Security. But, most Americans have very little idea what the President can do.

We have billions and billions to throw at Ukraine. Kamala promised billions to African countries (who hate us). Billions are spent to house feed and educate illegals. But we may have to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits.

The article left off Medicaid. He promised multiple times not to cut that as well.

As of now, Trump has promised to not cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. That's a plus or minus for some.

The funding for social security and Medicare, is inadequate for the future expected expenditures for those programs.

We are collectively incapable of discussing these issues. Then we get into Democrats saying Republicans want to throw granny off the cliff. So then nothing will be done realistically.

Does Trump have a plan to deal with the impending Social Security collapse? Or is he just going to crank up the money-printing machines and kick the can down the road, while criticizing those who want to address the issue?

Ever notice that Trump's default position sounds a lot like the Democrats?

The RINOs want the money to spend everywhere. The Spending orgy is why they want Biden in power.

You want to permenently end the GOP’s ability to win majorities in Congress or win the White House?

Do what DeSantis wanted to do and watch the Media and the DNC crush the GOP with constant attack ads yelling that GOP want’s to kill Grandma.

Instead of actually trying something such as shutting down agencies that are not constitutional (Education, EPA, etc.) and cutting off all allocations of funds being given to Illegal Aliens, etc., DeSantis wants to get the retired Americans that have legally been forced to pay into a retirement system completely apoplectic or angry at the GOP for stealing money they rightfully believe is theirs.

Lots of politicians of both parties want to kick the can down the road. We have a situation in which politicians of both parties are unable or unwilling to understand the financial problems ahead, unable or unwilling to explain in plain English to voters what’s involved, unable or unwilling to talk about some of the trade offs and tough choices that would need to be made to deal with all of this.

Tough choices don’t poll well.

Well there you go. These problems are nothing new, and in 2005 , George Bush came up with some plans to deal with it. His plans were shot down and nothing has been done about it since. The political will isn’t there, and the ability to make tough choices and trade-offs, just will not happen with our elected officials.

Full disclosure, both me and mrs. abb collect SS, so my opinions aren’t completely independent.

But it is red-a$$ing to see nowhere near the alarm from the Uniparty over money for Ukraine, welfare, endless federal agencies, and climate change.

And then they try to tell us SS is the problem. I don’t think so.

Instead of actually trying something such as shutting down agencies that are not constitutional (Education, EPA, etc.)

The best hire Trump ever made was in Scotty Pruitt to take a flamethrower to the EPA.

He used congressionally-mandated funds on frivolities such as sound-proof telephone booths and football tickets, instead of using this money to enforce job-destroying environmental regulations.

Keep in mind, he couldn’t give the money back. EPA funds were appropriated by federal law.

Liberals had a fit. They believe the EPA belongs to them regardless of who is in the White House.

Trump demanded Pruitt’s resignation.

DeSantis is a low effort, low charisma tool of the failed USA ancien regime. He lacks the basic intelligence, integrity and character to do anything other than more of the same- a low quality noted by his quick turn against President Trump and MAGA after paying slavish obeisance to get elected. He is a hollow man, a facile puppet, like so many in the current climate.

I was reading that McDonalds corporate is cutting a bunch of staff and will cut the pay of those who wish to stay employed. Makes you wonder why. Oh yeah... those wonderful big pay raises they got and the supply chain problems. Isn’t this kinda like karma?

The future is crashing because of the promises of the past. Parties merely fight over the crumbs of the republic, squabbles don't have solutions, and the solutions require tough decisions. As of now, its far easy to merely promise and continue can kicking.

Scott Pruitt was a good Attorney General for Oklahoma.
Sure wish he would have run against lankford for Senate.
He would be better than the plumber also.
