As former President Donald Trump faces likely criminal charges, his campaign is preparing to wage a political war.
With an indictment looming from the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, Trump’s campaign is laying the groundwork for a broad attack on Bragg, a Democrat. According to two of Trump’s political allies, the campaign will aim to portray any charges as part of a coordinated offensive by the Democratic Party against Trump, who is trying to become only the second former president to win a new term after leaving office.
It is unclear what data points, if any, the Trump team plans to point to beyond Bragg’s party registration in order to make a case that the district attorney is part of a broader political conspiracy against the former president. It is also uncertain whether Trump will add lawyers to his legal defense team or bring on a communications adviser to play a more traditional role of responding to what will be a crush of media questions related to a potential indictment.
The Justice Department has spent months investigating Trump in separate inquiries into his possession of hundreds of classified documents at his private club, Mar-a-Lago, and his efforts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election.
Those efforts led to the most visible moment when Trump focused the anger of his supporters on the institutions of government, the lead-up to the violent riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

That’s the entire reason he’s being persecuted. He needs continued prayers. It’s a spiritual battle, actually the final battle for the survival of our free nation under God.

Why does Manhattan have jurisdiction when John Edwards was tried in federal court for the same thing?
President Trump should demand the same treatment that Edwards got.
For proper context, we have to look at the incident with John Kerry's 2004 VP running mate John Edwards. Edwards' wife Elizabeth announced that she had breast cancer the week before the 2004 election, which Kerry/Edwards lost.
Edwards later ran for President in the 2008 Democrat primaries. He was getting the sympathy vote because his wife had announced that her cancer had returned. Early in the campaign, the National Enquirer discovered that John Edwards was having an affair with campaign photographer Reille Hunter, and ultimately had a love child with her. Edwards eventually dropped out, the charge of cheating on his dying wife was too much for even a Democrat to overcome.
Allegedly, Edwards was paying Hunter to keep quiet about it, but it was eventually discovered. People questioned whether the payments to Hunter amounted to illegal use of campaign funds, but the Edwards campaign argued that cash is fungible and it's hard to tell which cash - campaign cash or Edwards' personal cash - was used for the payments. Edwards eventually went to trial in federal court in North Carolina and was acquitted on the count of misuse of campaign funds, and two other counts were a mistrial. The DoJ declined to retry those two counts.
If President Trump were to be indicted for misuse of campaign funds when he had billions of his own (and no love child to hide), it would be in a New York court which would be hostile to him.
Still, the spectacle of trying President Trump in a local New York City court for the same charge that Edwards was acquitted on in federal court would twist the liberal talking heads into knots, especially when no child was involved and Trump didn't need the campaign cash to pay anyone off.
I just don't see how Bragg has any jurisdiction here.
