'Top Gun: Maverick' is 'insidious' for portraying 'virtue' of U.S. military: MSNBC editor

MSNBC opinion editor Zeeshan Aleem recently condemned "Top Gun: Maverick" as the "most insidious movie" at the Oscars" because it shows the U.S. military as a "beacon of virtue."

Aleem trashed the "Best picture" nominee in a Saturday morning column for painting America’s military in a positive light, lamenting that the "literal propaganda," as he described it, is "poised to become canonized as a highly decorated film." The Academy Awards are on Sunday.

The action flick, which almost single-handedly recharged the dwindling film industry after the stagnation caused by COVID-19 lockdowns, has been nominated for six Oscars, including "Best Picture."

Zeeshan Aleem called the film a 'poisonous kind of nostalgia' that 'smuggles love of endless war into a celebration of live action'

These people never change. I lived in Eugene Oregon for over forty years and got an MBA in Finance from the University of Oregon (U of O) after I left active duty. There were howling protests over the Army ROTC at the U of O and expressions of concern by all the important people in Eugene. We who served in Vietnam were popularly regarded with contempt, disgust, and derision. I will always be regarded as a lunatic, drug addicted, baby killing fascist pig by an important, popular faction of my peers and their descendants.

When expressing this sentiment became unpopular, the belief of those important Eugene citizens remained unchanged. To be considered a citizen of the city you had to despise veterans and the United States of America. The Veteran’s Day parade was forced into Springfield by the Eugene city government. When US forces went into Kuwait to drive out the Iraqis, a motel on Coburg Road put out its flags. They were forced to remove them because it was an illegal display of the American flag. When a National Guard unit returned to Eugene, I went to the airport to greet them and the police made me leave a small American flag in my truck, because if I took it into the terminal, I might use it as a weapon.

I remember liberals agonizing over the first “Top Gun” about it
having a “war is fun” message.

Some NYC hack wrote that of course.

No entity is perfect. No job, not corporation, no school,
no police department, no committee in Congress, and no
judicial proceeding is perfect. Christians aren’t perfect.

We have a military that is ultimately there to make sure
this nation remains viable. Is it perfect? Is it used
perfectly? Could things be better? No it’s not, and
yes it could be better.

Productive criticism is warranted. Trashing the military
as if it is wicked and shouldn’t exist is > IMO < an act
of treason.

All this type of thing does is undermine the integrity
of the United States. We’re going to need our military
and I think we better start thinking in those terms,
and avoid joining MSNBC in it’s attempt to leave us with
no way to protect ourselves, if China continues to push
it’s efforts to take over as the global top dog.

Wait Zeeshan, it'll get much worse.

He then skewered the film over its main mission, to go and bomb a "a nuclear enrichment site which could very well be in Iran."

The horrors.

The action flick, which almost single-handedly recharged the dwindling film industry after the stagnation caused by COVID-19 lockdowns, has been nominated for six Oscars, including "Best Picture."

Life imitates art.

From Micosoft: “Zeeshan Aleem is a New York City-based freelance journalist, columnist for VICE, and Adjunct professor at the New School who writes about politics, policy and society. Her expertise is in American politics, and she focuses most of her attention these days on the Democrats and the left.” There are photos of Zeeshan as a heavily bearded male.
