Google Cuts 12,000 Jobs in Company’s Largest-Ever Round of Layoffs

Google has announced that it will be laying off 12,000 workers — roughly 6% of its current workforce — in another round of recent cuts at a major tech company. Google joins Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook parent company Meta in announcing mass layoffs in recent weeks. The companies have cited recent economic decline following post-pandemic boosts that led to increased hiring.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who also heads its parent company Alphabet, informed staff about the cuts in an email on Friday night. The email was later posted on the tech giant’s news blog.

“I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected,” Pichai wrote in the email.

“Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” he went on to say.

“I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI,” the email continued. “To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices. So, we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company.”

According to the Associated Press, the latest cuts account for the company’s largest-ever round of layoffs.

The layoffs add to thousands of jobs lost in recent weeks at additional tech giants, including Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook parent company Meta.

Meta, like Google, laid off thousands of workers this past November in what amounted to the company’s largest single round of layoffs. The company also cited recent economic woes that followed a brief hiring and growth spree in the immediate aftermath of pandemic lockdowns being lifted.

Excellent news. As an investor in tech, I am glad to hear that the big tech companies are trimming fat and getting back down to business.

Technological advancements wait for no man...or for fat previously inventive companies.

This is another blow to Marxism and the Woke movement and a big up-vote for capitalism.

They’ll be moving back to the parent’s basement...unless they live there already.

Actually I think these big tech companies watched Elon kick people to the curb with impunity and cut all those fancy workplace benefits like free food, Baristas and nap rooms and decided to follow his lead.

I was talking recently to an acquaintance who’s an investment manager for a hedge-fund type entity. His firm is invested heavily in Google/Alphabet and similar companies. He said that Google/Alphabet implemented a widespread “work from home” system during covid, and they had tens of thousands of employees sitting around at home not accomplishing a damned thing (e.g., software engineers who devoted like 10 minutes a day to projects if that). That kind of dead weight is unsustainable.

Right. “Been there, done that.”

On to new lives as barristas. Or fast oil change workers. Or battling illegals for the lawn cutting jobs.

I remember hearing a brick and mortar printed books bookstore employee at Border’s (defunct) say to another: “We deserve higher pay. You and I have master’s degrees and we bring more knowledge to this place but get paid bottom of the barrel money. It’s not fair.”

A career beckons in industrial demolition.

Thanks to shipping jobs overseas, multitudes of abandoned factories,
warehouses, etc.

The company I worked for specialized in abandoned sawmills,
plentiful in oregon and washington state.

Those 12,000 jobs just went to the CCP folk that’s all. No loss for this communist POS enterprise.

Musk supposedly cut 70% of the heads at Tweater and it seems to be working OK. I think some others tech outfits took notice.

There needs to be a law that says all layoffs will start with H-1b visa workers. When they are all gone only then fire US citizens.
