It seems as if anything can be done – truly anything – if it is in the name of safety.
From the pandemic to peanut butter, as long as a new rule, regulation, mandate, dictate is couched in the language of improving safety it is either completely cosseted from criticism or its possibilities for gross governmental misuse are downplayed as the ravings of a paranoid lunatic.
California and the rest of the nation may very well soon learn that when it comes to “good intentions,” if the government is involved the true intentions are often hidden and they are very rarely good.
And it is on these intentions the imposition of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) on drivers could be introduced at a federal level.

If your car’s social credit system doesn’t get the pulse tones, because of the faraday bag, your car’s “kill switch” will floor your accelerator at an inopportune moment and you’ll spend your last millisecond feeling like Michael Hastings did.
Hmmmm..... easily fixed by driving pre-computerized vehicles.
Good thing I’m sitting on around twelve of them as they may be in high demand soon enough. Easier to fix as well.
Actually my experience with the parts is that China is getting too far up the cost ladder.
Stuff now coming from Indonesia, Vietnam, and India.
I watched it go USA >>> Mexico >>> China and now it’s moving farther down the cost scale.
I made some dough in the 70s disconnecting seat belt starter interlock systems, and converting unleaded gas cars to use leaded.
Down scale, and quality is following along.
I was not kidding about three parts to get one good.
I still remember the Chinese knock-off brake pads, made from sawdust.
And how many deaths will result from this? who cares as long as we control you there will be casualties in the beginning but it will all work out for your betterment
The design will be such that if the communication to the car is ever lost, the car defaults to shut down.
