Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax Gets a Killer Boost Federal New Car ‘Kill Switch’ Reg Opens Backdoor
California Globe ^ | January 8, 2023 | Thomas Buckley

It seems as if anything can be done – truly anything – if it is in the name of safety.

From the pandemic to peanut butter, as long as a new rule, regulation, mandate, dictate is couched in the language of improving safety it is either completely cosseted from criticism or its possibilities for gross governmental misuse are downplayed as the ravings of a paranoid lunatic.

California and the rest of the nation may very well soon learn that when it comes to “good intentions,” if the government is involved the true intentions are often hidden and they are very rarely good.

And it is on these intentions the imposition of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) on drivers could be introduced at a federal level.

In the Biden infrastructure bill signed last year, a relatively obscure bit calls for all new cars built after 2026 to have a “kill switch.”

Say what!

And McCarthy will introduce it.

And McCarthy won't do a damned thing to overturn it before it goes into effect.

At what level would the founding fathers EVER have thought something like this was Constitutional?

Heck, even Lincoln era Republicans, or 1890s democrats, or 1920s politicians?

Technology assisted tyrants.

Excuse me while I laugh hilariously. Do they expect us to believe that it’s for safety? The powers that be want the ability to make your car pull over to the side, or to direct it straight to the nearest police station, or jail.

Surely it will be ONLY to catch criminals and to keep the public safe! Bullroar, and don’t call me Shirley! If you speak up at a school board meeting about those male teachers who prance around kindergarten in lipstick, blond wigs, high heels - you can expect that your “self driving” car will drive itself to the nearest fbi office so you can get the proper reeducation.

The “green” movement is all about control. Don’t behave? We’ll cut your power to your house. We’ll shut off your car. We’ll tax you to death even if you behave.

You can’t go there. You can’t do that. We know what you’re doing and where you’ve gone. You’re going to pay extra taxes for that, peasant.

Clearly, you are an optimist.
So glad I will never own any car newer than 1980.

And what can McCarthy do to overturn it? He can sponsor legislation, have it pass the House and watch it die in the Schumer controlled Senate? If it passes the Senate, how does he force Biden to sign it?

The most we can hope for is the that the Republican-controlled House doesn’t contribute to making things worse. They can do little to make things better.

Yes, they can investigate, hold hearings that will either be ignored by the media or criticized by them for being ‘partisan’. They can uncover dirt. Any subpoenas issued can be safely ignored because the DOJ will decline to prosecute.

Holding the House and winning the Senate and Presidency in 2024 would be nice.

Franklin said it best:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

We had that in 2016. The GOPe fought MAGA every step of the way.

I remember. And we thought it couldn’t get worse. But, of course it did. We lost the House in 2018, which meant that Trump would be impeached, they were just waiting for the ‘crime’. Then came 2020 and we get Brandon and Kamila holding the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

Presumably there would be a receiver device the receives the “kill” command. One wonders if a simple Faraday bag around this component would insulate the car from such a command.

Funding is within the scope of the house. If they had our interest at heart they could hold every penny hostage to any change they want.

I believe the funding for this crap was passed by the late-non-lamented House. As I wrote before, I just hoping things don’t get worse.

And we know how the ‘holding the government hostage’ ploy works out. The House refuses a ‘vital’ funding package, there is a threat of a government shutdown. First things to shut down will be National Parks and Monuments, IRS refund checks, the threat of Social Security checks (Republicans want old people to starve!!). The press and Biden will be outraged at the ‘threat to our democracy’, ‘cooler heads’ will prevail and the dems will get what they want.

Possibly. "The more they overthinj the plumbing, the easier it it to stop up the drain".

But how to test something like that?

Seems like there's a potential money-making opportunity for black market gangs. They'll help you get around all these government blocks. Many would rather pay a gang than the government.
