From work from home to collect at home: Why are so many people walking by those "help wanted" signs rather than inquiring about work?

My late father had a very strong work ethic. He came here with a wife and three kids and worked two jobs to take care of us. Eventually, he got back to banking, his profession in Cuba, but he worked carrying luggage at a hotel for almost four years. My father would be shocked to see people collecting money for doing nothing.

Why are so many people walking by those "help wanted" signs rather than inquiring about work? The answer is government benefits, what a friend from Finland once called the "European disease" -- paying people for not working.

This is a horrible report but it's true.  Let's check the details:

The labor force participation rate was 62.1% last month, notably lower than the 63.4% mark it was at before the coronavirus pandemic struck the United States in March 2020.

There are numerous reasons that unemployed Americans aren't entering the workforce, including ongoing fears of COVID-19, disabilities such as "long COVID," and other care responsibilities. One factor that is contributing to the relatively low labor force participation rate is the combination of unemployment benefits and recently expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, according a new study by the nonprofit Committee to Unleash Prosperity.

In 14 states, unemployment benefits and ACA subsidies for family of four with two people not working amounts to annualized equivalent of $80,000 a year in wages and benefits, the study found.

Those benefits come out to over $100,000 in three states -- Washington, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

If you pay them to stay home then they will stay home, to paraphrase the famous baseball movie. I do find interesting that Massachusetts and New Jersey are losing population to red states. Maybe people are getting tired of paying taxes to support these benefits.

Democracy fails as soon as people find out can VOTE for a living.

Well should these people be praised for maximizing their economic well being while expending no effort? The old rationale economic man theory. Sarcasm or not?

Well, when wages have been pretty much stagnant for 50 years (while all other expenses are NOT stagnant), it’s kind of inevitable that government has to pick up the slack. And since government benefits are not stagnant, it’s become a losing proposition to keeping working, for all but the higher tiers of wage earners.

I know that’s not a popular opinion, but the facts are the facts.

How does the math work on this and how does one get these “benefits”.

With the "big boxes" it is because they can not hire you.

You have to go to the company website and apply.

And then the algorithm will sort and forward some of the application to the centralized HR department where it will not be a priority to sort it again (they are too busy taking pictures of their lunch) and after a couple of months it might finally be passed on to the manager at a business about sixty miles away rather then the one you wanted to work at.

When you say you do not want to drive 60 miles to work a four hour shift they will cry how they can not "find anyone who wants to work".

Let the robots do it.. While we appreciate fine art and beauty(a man dressed like a women and or “married” to another man).
And white people finally get what they deserve for not using the proper language some nutty professors created...and all those inventions they came up with that made life easier for Marxists and subversives.
Serves them right.

‘how does one get these “benefits”’

Well, first get a job, then find a way to get yourself fired where you can argue it’s not for “cause” (this is the tricky part). That gets you on unemployment.

To get the real money though, you will need to be an unmarried woman with multiple dependent children. And then get yourself and as many of those children diagnosed with “disabilities” as possible, to collect Social Security disability payments. Bonus if you can qualify for a disability that makes you permanently unable to work, because then you can continue to collect benefits without even trying to find a job.

And beyond that, you want to get those subsidized housing benefits, apply for programs to reimburse you for utilities, give you a free Obama phone, food stamps, etc, etc.

America has the world’s reserve currency. We also have a completely printed, fiat currency and manipulated interest rates, and our Federal Reserve has now established the practice of monetizing Federal debt

The upshot: every.single.one of progressive/woke/leftist government welfare and insane social engineering schemes can be funded, as well as a WHOLE lot of MIC and political thievery as well. We can export part of our inflation, and the world must take our printed pix of George Washington.

It won’t last forever. But while it does, don’t be surprised Americans won’t work for $15 an hour

People aren't gonna go work for a large company that wanted to force them to get a shot. Customer service jobs have to deal with urbans and karens. Lots of people have gone gault and work under the table.

Or could turn around tomorrow and tell them to get one.

These companies haven't thought this one out.

(Not that they think much out anyway, but they really haven't thought this one out.)

Also, I don’t know about all of these jobs available. I am a retired Navy Commander with a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy and and MBA. Still young. I can’t get an interview in the DFW area with anyone. I work in a brewery for $12 an hour. I even applied at Buc-ee’s. No call backs. I call BS on the media saying there are jobs everywhere for the taking.

Good summation of the current hiring process...:)

And those “jobs” usually don’t pay worth beans or have benefits, etc. And they consider employees expendable so at the first down turn you are gone...

And another fun fact...try getting a job, even part time, if you are over 60. Not happening. First you have more experience than the person hiring you, second you won’t put up with the poor mgmt. for that measly $12 an hour, and lastly you will get all the work dumped on you because you have a sense of responsibility and a work ethic.

I helped a couple of my former employees find jobs.

I hated to let them go but our property management business died of Government.

These were good hardworking people and they had a time and a half finding jobs. Finally they both got jobs with small businesses.

At least at a small business you can get an interview.

Seems like a job just to get them.

“And then the algorithm will sort and forward some of the application to the centralized HR department “

Walmart forwards the application to stores selected by the applicant.

They don’t make it too easy, or everyone would be lining up to sign on.
