The program set out to provide borrowers with up to $20,000 in student loan relief.

District Judge Mark Pittman ruled that the program was “an unconstitutional exercise of Congress’s legislative power.”

Constitution? Bah, humbug!
Separation of Powers? Bah, humbug!

We just do what we want. “You and what army are going to stop us?”

And they think Republicans are dictators, tyrants and fascists!

Wanting to give people a free lunch. I’d hate to think what will happen to them when the free lunch does end (and it will).

Agreed. Should never have been created in the first place. Would not be missed once it is closed permanently.

Every measure of academic performance has gone down since that abomination was created. The number of administrators now exceeds the number of teachers by a huge margin all to feed that DOE beast with data and reports. There used to be one administrator per 100 students. I swear it has flipped the other way now based on what teachers tell me.

Same with the Department of Energy.

Republicans better hold the line on this. The Department of Education will receive $0 in funding. The people defying the court need to be fired.

Before everyone gets too bent out of shape about this, the Department isn't actually cancelling any debt yet. All they're doing is continuing to take applications while this case is on appeal. Unless the Court's order prohibited not only cancellation of the loans but the taking of the applications, which is very unlikely, the Court's order isn't being "defied".

And it's not the Republicans who really have anything to do with it. It's in the court system now, and I think most people who follow the court expect the order striking down the program to be upheld by the Supreme Court.

This one is very likely a win in the end.

If the program does not actually happen then it worked to get the votes. But we have seen that it does work to get votes. So in 2024 they can float the whole thing again, get the votes again and then see it stopped in court. Lather, rinse, repeat.

For now. But this will be repeated in the future. It works to get the votes.

Not just defund, hold each of the persons responsible financially for all moneys spent on the program.
