PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The ongoing effects of climate change continue to plague our global ecosystem and place communities of lower socioeconomic status at risk.
Medical experts say there's another side effect. Climate change's impact on youth health.
Dr. Leah Werner, a family medicine doctor, and professor at the Oregon Health and Science University says children are not as well adept at thermoregulation, and their lungs and heart and more sensitive than adults, leaving them at risk of developing a variety of illnesses.
Dr. Werner emphasized how kids in low-income areas are most vulnerable, and Bill Ripple, an ecology professor at Oregon State University agrees.
He's the author of a climate report called 'World Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency 2022.’
Ripple says greenhouse gas emissions rising 40% over the last 30 years, with more climate disasters occurring in recent years.
With more climate disasters happening, kids everywhere are paying the price, he said.
Dr. Werner says now is the time to act. Medical education can train family physicians, pediatricians, internal medicine docs, OBGYNs, and psychiatrists to begin addressing climate change concerns within family units and patients, both adults and with children.
She also says it's important to teach adults how to have these conversations with their children.
“We’re looking at a time where the field of medicine has a professional responsibility to address this and keep our communities healthy," she said.
Schools also play a role in educating and protecting kids against climate change. Many schools in our area have installed HEPA air filters and updated AC units to protect students during the summer months and wildfire season.

Meanwhile it is the coldest PNW November I remember in nearly 60 years living on this rock. It has never been this cold for so long. Diesel is now $7 a gallon and propane is $4. OH wait. Cold is caused by global warming too. WE’RE DOOMED. OH but think how much carbon people will save freezing because they can’t afford heating oil and propane.
The only things influencing youth health are video games and social media…
