When it comes to EVs, Toyota has been dragging their feet, but now reality is hitting them smack in the face - they were wrong about EVs - and are beginning to look a bit like Kodak. Meanwhile, Tesla has been kicking butt and taking names and Toyota may soon be a relic of the past if they don’t pivot quickly.

The trouble with Toyota is, they have been number 1 in the car business for so long, they find it hard to turn round and even contemplate reducing their dominant position in the ICE vehicles to commit seriously to EV's. They are still making half hearted efforts with their hybrid cars and a very small market share in EVs. Its going to cost them sooner or later.

I’m thinking that Tesla has a ways to go to hit the sweet spot in economy of production - but at some point they will get there and they should be very profitable.

The relative simplicity of an EV compared to a conventional ICE powered car is quite significant. It should take much less effort (labor, robotics) to assemble. At some point they should reap the benefits of that, and perhaps lower prices.

They are not doing too much of anything in EVs right now. Both companies have small market shares in EVs.

About 20% of Toyota/Lexus sales are electrified vehicles. The Prius is getting really dated & needs an upgrade, I think. But maybe they’re just trying to keep it more affordable.

Commuting 50 miles one way, 5 days a week is 500 miles a week.

Lots of workers do that and more heading into Los Angeles and back home, for example.

What would the EV share of the new car market be without CAFE standards and financial incentives to buy EVs?

If government tyranny successfully forces the issue, Toyota is doing fine already on Hydrogen cars in California and Japan, and can use (we hope) a better battery technology than is presently available is forced to make battery EVs in large numbers.

Apple was nowhere first to the party with MP3 players, but when their better product came out, it dominated despite the high cost.

If reality kicks in on batteries and power generation, Toyota is already there, though already hybrid-centric due to CAFE. They do hybrids well, though I do not care for the underlying philosophy of them.

I am already planning to keep my wife’s 2018 Avalon going for as long as there is gasoline and a me.

The oil and gas companies have received government subsidies for decades.
And GM got a huge loan of over $50 Billion in 2008, out of which they were not able to pay back $11 Billion so the federal government was forced to write that $11 Billion off. Thats subsidies.
And if you think Toyota is going to do an Apple iPod on Tesla, you are living in could cuckoo-land.

Grids will not handle the increased load, and a lot more generation is needed. The environmental damage to mine for this crap too is crazy, and very ironic to the weirdos defending this stuff. If it’s so great, let markets decide. It doesn’t need to be forced.

Don’t get me wrong. I fully understand the advantages of EVs. I am not getting one because I live in the apartment block and the manager is against putting a charger in the parking garage because they think it is a fire risk. If I move to a house I am getting a used S-model in a heartbeat. I also need to drive about 3,000 miles both ways twice a month over the area where even a gas is hard to get. That is why I am not partying with the ICE vehicle any time soon. My point is that ICE is going to stay relevant for a time being.

A Prius doesn’t need to be charged, ever. By 2025, it will have a much more efficient hard anode battery. Toyota will use that tech in all its platforms. You’re just using us for free research.
