NHL Commits to Increasing ‘Diversity,’ Reduce Share of White Players, Employees

The NHL released a “diversity & inclusion” report on Monday declaring its commitment to implement hiring practices related to “racial demographics,” “gender identity,” and “sexual orientation.”

“We are working to better understand and accelerate our engagement across all layers of diversity – including nationality, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and religion – and their nuances and intersections,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman wrote in the report’s introduction.

1. NHL teams averaged 3.14 goals per game in 2021-22, the highest total since 1995-96. The lowest average since the 1967 expansion was 2.57 goals/game in 2003-04.

2. NBA scoring is lower today than it was 40 years ago.

3. The other major sports where scoring is up are Major League Baseball and the NFL. In MLB, the higher scoring is driven by a game that has become exhaustingly dull with every batter swinging for the fences and either hitting a home run or striking out. In the NFL, the higher scoring is based on rule changes that have basically turned it into touch football.

4. The "first year expansion team" you describe was the Las Vegas Golden Knights. They were the beneficiary of an unusual set of circumstances. The 2017 expansion draft was originally set up for TWO expansion teams, not one. So the draft rules really limited the number of players who could be protected by the existing teams. The Seattle franchise that was supposed to enter the NHL at the same time backed out late in the process, but the NHL left the draft rules in place. In addition, the growing popularity of no-trade clauses in player contracts meant that the existing teams were forced to protect older players with high salaries who usually would have been unprotected in an expansion draft. As a result of these circumstances, the Golden Knights had the opportunity to select a whole roster of talented players -- many of whom were legitimate NHL stars who never would have been left unprotected in prior expansion drafts.

all the teams looks the same...play the same.

Exactly. The game has been studied, analyzed and perfected from a coaching standpoint.

lol...word salad...please explain all the weird rule changes the last 20 years. Look, they all started playing these “defensive systems” in the mid-late 90’s and proceeded to ruin their own game. I look at the goalie pads now and just burst out laughing....Nameless, faceless cult sport now..

They should fix the problem in the NHL and the NBA by establishing a trade compact, where NBA players are forced to play hockey while hockey players are put into the NBA games.

The circumstances leading up to the 2017 expansion draft effectively doomed the Chicago Blackhawks to a decade of mediocrity.

NHL teams were permitted to protect 11 players for the draft, and Chicago was FORCED to protect 8 of them due to no-trade/no-movement contracts. They even had to protect Marian Hossa in that draft -- even though he had already announced that he was taking time off to deal with a medical condition (without formally retiring) and would never play another game in the NHL.

Not word salad at all. Actual facts. Scoring IS UP. Teams averaged 3.14 goals per game last year. 20 years ago the average was 2.51. UP. And the 3rd period, which used to revolve around turtling and no goals, now has 33% of the total goals

What weird rule changes? 2004 and 4 was a major overhaul, they put in the trapezoid, ended the two line pass rule, increased the behind the net zone and increased the offensive zone. The trapezoid was a little weird, but the neutral zone trap needed to be broken, making dump and chase easier helped. Moving the lines ain’t weird.

Goalie pads are smaller now. Leg pads lost an inch, blockers lost an inch, and gloves lost 3.

It’s only nameless and faceless because you’ve decided to not learn any of the names and faces. That’s on you. Not the sport.

You're picking on the wrong targets, dude.

First of all, you cite the "defensive systems" that were adopted back in the 1990s as if they are some kind of problem TODAY -- even though NHL scoring is substantially higher now than it was back then.

Secondly ... goalie pads haven't been an issue in several years. What has changed the most for the goalie position is that the NHL is now filled with goalies who are phenomenal athletes in their own right. Take a look at a random set of video clips from the 1970s and 1980s, and notice how awful the goaltending was back then. That's because we didn't see the first generation of modern, athletic goalies who had been trained as goalies since they were kids until Grant Fuhr and Patrick Roy arrived on the scene in the 1980s. North America was about a decade behind the Soviets when it came to training hockey goalies. Vladislav Tretiak set the standard for modern goaltending in the 1970s, and that was when NHL coaches began to stand up and take note of how much better a goalie could be.

The NHL should recruit some Eskimo players. They are naturals on the ice. There must be quite a few out there. Aleutian Islanders too.

kinda hard to get excited about ummm...say, Dylan Larkin becoming a 25 goal scorer when i watched a 20 year old Wayne Gretzky destroy Phil Esposito’s single year goal record by 16 goals in 1981....i was lucky to watch the greatest hockey ever played in the 80’s and early 90’s...what i see now is awful....to each their own i guess.

Teams have gotten better at shutting down 1 player now. No longer can a guy walk over the league and put up 80 goals and 150 assists. We see that in the Caps, when did the Caps finally win a Cup, when they stopped being Ovechkin and Friends. They spread the scoring, taught Ovie to not try to carry the team and start supporting it.

Plus of course goalies are just BETTER, wven with smaller equipment they’re positional, smarter, read plays better. A 920 save rate used lead the league, now it gets you sent down to the minors.

But it ain’t the trap 90s anymore. The game is open. The game is fast. Scoring is up. No lead is safe. And we’re even getting multiple 50 scorers a season. Yeah it ain’t the wide open 80s anymore. But there IS good product on the ice. And the things you were are factually incorrect. Period. You don’t want to watch, fine, don’t care. But don’t say scoring is down, it isn’t.

The NHL got rid of the two line pass rule in 2005, which effectively eliminated the neutral zone trap, resulting in increased scoring.
I’d still rather have old-time hockey and the “Chuck” Norris division.

Well, the last box has been checked...

Now there are no more valid organized sports to watch & enjoy at any level...

Hockey has joined NASCAR, NFL, NBA, Baseball, and golf as irrelevant and putrid entertainment pastimes...
