Standing Is Tiring (SIT) Act would let workers sit down on the job

Are you sitting down for this? If not, this bill is for you.

New legislation in Albany is hoping to provide some relief to workers who are on their feet all day. The physically taxing dilemma has deep roots in New York. (And was memorably captured on an episode of "Seinfeld" where George convinces a store to let the security guard sit down… the guard promptly falls sleep, allowing thieves to walk off with merchandise.)

The bill, called the Standing Is Tiring Act — or the SIT Act — has just been introduced in the state Legislature.

If passed, the legislation would require employers to allow employees to sit at work if it doesn't interfere with the nature of the work. The state's Department of Labor would decide who gets to sit and which profession has to stay on its feet.

Assembly member Karines Reyes, a Bronx Democrat, is the bill's sponsor. She says she knows first-hand what being on one's feet all day is like. She has been a registered nurse for several years and said science shows prolonged standing can lead to health problems, injuries, and absenteeism.

"Making accommodations for employees to have that option, to perhaps stand and sit whatever their duties allow them to — I think is fair and humane," Reyes said.

While the bill focuses on the people who are standing all day at work to get them a break because standing too long is bad for their health, sitting for too long can be detrimental to one's health, too.

The bill's sponsors will start the heavy lifting of convincing fellow lawmakers and the governor once they're back in session in January. The bill has been referred to the Labor committee.

I recall the line from a Louis L’Armor western (I think) about sit when you can, sleep when you have time, and eat when there’s food (something like that).

All good advice. Not sure we need laws about it though.

“If passed, the legislation would require employers to allow employees to sit at work if it doesn’t interfere with the nature of the work.”

I guess it will take a few lawyers to sort this out.

New York can’t do this. If workers sit down more they’re liable to drink Big Gulps! LOL

I imagine even lying down wouldn’t interfere with the nature of many work assignments. Some assignments, particularly government ones, might yield better results if they just slept through them.

That old science fiction book I read about the future where everyone laid on a bed and stared at other people on screens day and night was prescient.

This law will work well for school crossing guards! It'll also work well for professional sports.

Who needs the Babylon Bee when you have demonrat socialists proposing legislation like this? Welcome to 'Bizarro World'!

I’m moving to NY. The government there cares and they will fix all my problems. I will never have to worry about anything again.

Look around. So many are overweight and unhealthy. There are consequences to prosperity.

More laws....and consequences to new laws like this will be vast as well.

There's a youtube video of California Gov. Reagan as a guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, from the 70s. Carson asked Reagan about Americans being very worried about the weak economy and hoping the government would do something to help them. Reagan's response was (paraphrase), "The people shouldn't look to government for solutions, the government is the problem. If the government shut down for a few weeks, we the people wouldn't even miss it." Carson, the other guests, and the audience suddenly became eerily quiet, I guess they were all stunned and maybe thinking: "WTF was that all about, Reagan, everyone knows we need government for everything!"

Democrats, RINOs, and the Hollyweird crowd will never learn.

Only a Dem could butt in to this minute level of a workplace environment.

Personally, one of the best things I did for myself was to purchase a height adjustable stand-up desk. I find it less tiring to stand and work at a desk than sit. I no longer suffer from backaches as I did when sitting all day.

And there was the movie “Wall•e” where humans had become so inert, they could not get out of their chairs.
