What's the matter with Pennsylvania?
Washington Examiner ^ | May 15, 2022 | Salena Zito

Posted on 05/15/2022 3:31:31 PM PDT by T Ruth

MEYERSDALE, Pennsylvania — Unless either Dr. Mehmet Oz or David McCormick pulls out a miracle between today and Tuesday evening, just over 20% of the Republican primary electorate is going to nominate Kathy Barnette for U.S. Senate.

This would mark the first time in modern Pennsylvania Republican primary history that such a complete unknown wins with no statewide infrastructure to support her candidacy, zero money, and little scrutiny. If she succeeds, she will have upended a race between two capable candidates who, up until a week ago, seemed to be locked in a two-man contest.

This would also mark the first time in Pennsylvania Republican primary history that an insurgent candidate has ever won a primary race. ***

***

*** There is no state party to rescue Oz or McCormick, because the party didn’t even have the spine to endorse in this race. ***

As a consequence, the party’s decision not to endorse in the governor's or Senate races has had long-reaching implications. By failing to do so, it left a ridiculous number of candidates in the race for both offices — in particular for the governor's race, where nine candidates stayed in long past their expiration date. This allowed the eccentric, far-right Doug Mastriano to suck up all of the oxygen.

In short, if Barnette wins — and everything at this moment points in that direction — she will undoubtedly run shoulder to shoulder with Mastriano. They’ve endorsed each other, they campaign together all the time, and they hold the same outsider standing — even outside of Trumpworld.

It is hard to find any pathway where either of them will win in November, even in the remarkable conditions available to Republican candidates right now.

No...My friend's daughter was born in Germany. Mom and dad were/are US citizens. The daughter STILL has dual citizenship.

So there are different reasons....and nothing bad about it.

Then, you must be familiar with the area here.

I remember seeing little witches hats made out of black construction paper put on the O’Donnell posters driving around town.

Instead, we ended up w/ Coons. /SPIT!

Barletta lost but it was a good run.

Lou was not well known in Philly and Pittsburgh back then.

That was where he was hurt.

She’s got mean tweets. Oz has a MAGA disposition. She’s the easier mark.

She could answer the questions on her military service.

What question is that? She gave a lengthy interview on Steve Bannon's show regarding her military service.

Oz has a MAGA disposition.

If he does, I bet it's short-lived since he only recently came by it.

Winning elections in the last isn’t a prerequisite for a political candidate in my book. Heck, I would even PREFER a candidate who has never held public office.

But if you’re going to run for public office as an outsider, you’d better have a background that includes some accomplishments of substance and/or some evidence of your ability to get things done on behalf of the people you want to represent. This is especially true when a political office as consequential as a seat in the U.S. Senate is at stake. There’s a huge difference between Donald Trump (or even Ben Carson) running for President with no political experience, and Kathy Barnette — who hasn’t even worked in a job as responsible as your local bank branch manager in the last decade — running for a Senate seat.

Sure, Barnette will have a hard row to hoe if she wins the primary. The GOP money will not go to her. They’d rather have a Democrat win than support an ultra MAGA like herself. And I’d also be concerned that Trump money won’t be there for her either, as she dared to challenge his pick. He’s already said she has no chance. Why would he waste his support on her in the general?

So likely any of the infrastructure needed to win will have to be built by her, herself, alone. And that will be tough.

BUT..........

They said the same thing about Trump in 2016.

Well- compared to Delaware it’s a lot more Republican. Outside of Philly and Pittsburgh.

You nailed it. The powers that ne in A. and elsewhere, are the same ones that gave us Arlen Spector...and we know how that worked out. My votes are for Barnette and Mastriano. Time will tell in November.

Doubt that. She strongly supported Trump. Was one of the very best reporters on Trump in 2016 and even since has been very good at warning Trump when his coalition was unraveling.

Hope you find your perfect candidate. Mine is a survivor of a rape who the entire world says should have been aborted. We need someone who will bring this issue to the battlefield. She is articulate, charismatic and passionate which is all that matters in a campaign.

What has Oz accomplished for the Conservative movement? BTW I have helped run elections in a blue state and won 10 of 13 so I have heard all your excuses.

You going to fall for the racist, sexist, homophobe tactic still? Grow a backbone.

I'm not looking for one.

Mine is a survivor of a rape who the entire world says should have been aborted.
It's a great story but it's not an accomplishment.

We need someone who will bring this issue to the battlefield.
I've been hearing that for decades. I'm not sure what that has done in even a single election since I registered to vote.

She is articulate, charismatic and passionate which is all that matters in a campaign.
Barack Hussein Obama agrees with you. I'm not sure what that even means.

What has Oz accomplished for the Conservative movement?
No less than Kathy Barnette has. And I'm not even sure what Oz has to do with this.

BTW I have helped run elections in a blue state and won 10 of 13 so I have heard all your excuses.
How many of these were statewide elections? Some of the bluest states in the U.S. have deep red districts.
