The owner of Burger King has said the operator of its 800 stores in Russia has “refused” to close them, despite its demand to suspend trading after the invasion of Ukraine.
Last week, Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International (RBI), said it had suspended all supply chain, operational and marketing support for the Russian operation.
RBI has been unable to close the operations directly, as rivals such as McDonald’s have done, because of a complicated legal contract with its main franchisee partner, Alexander Kolobov, with whom it has run the joint venture in Russia for a decade.
“We contacted the main operator of the business and demanded the suspension of Burger King restaurant operations in Russia,” David Shear, the president of RBI, said in a statement and letter to staff. “He has refused to do so. Would we like to suspend all Burger King operations immediately in Russia? Yes. Are we able to enforce a suspension of operations today? No.”
Burger King is one of a number of western companies, including Marks & Spencer and the hotel groups Marriott and Accor, that are prevented by complex franchise deals from withdrawing.

They get their food from big refrigerators in the back. ;-D
“Is now Burger Czar. I having it my way.”
Remember when Bill Clinton and his Secret Service detail would all go jogging … to the nearby fast food joint? Of course only Bill ate….
I wouldn’t. I’d keep it Burger King and ask corporate to send their divisions if they don’t like it.
Is Red Robin really that good? I have one nearby, and have never tried it.
Wasn’t it David Selznick (or some other Hollywood bigwig) that said there are only thirty stories in all of human history, and he knew all of them by heart?
Neocon boot lickers are crying right now because Russia still has some McDonald’s
And instead of “user satisfaction surveys”, they send goons to knock on your door in the middle of the night and interrogate you about your experience....
I am shocked, shocked to find out that the Russian Burger King wants to have it his way.
I tried it once...it’s good, but IMO I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. I’d rather go to a local independent place first.
“Burger King owner says operator in Russia refuses to shut shops”
Why should the Russian operators go to jail for him? Was that in their contract?
“FIVE GUYS are light years ahead of both BK and McD.”
Certainly in price.
Borat? Borat, is that you? I loved you on the Ali G show.
Not quite because I've never seen a five guys.
“Is Red Robin really that good?”
Like most things, it used to be a lot better. “Gourmet” burgers are all ok. Their fries are good and bottomless.
Prices are higher than most local mom and pop joints.
Bullsh!t
When governments get involved with business, business/Capitalism ALWAYS loses.
If they can't buy protection from politicians, they have to satisfy customers. Tends to keep business honest.

I doubt the name will change. The west has already done their worst so why would Russia provide western entities any legal protections within their borders. Any western companies who engaged in the cancelling of Russia should consider their assets, be they physical or intellectual property, gone.
It’s a sit down restaurant/bar. So it really competes with Chili’s, Friday’s etc instead of with the burger joints. Lots better than fast food burgers, but not outstanding for a sit down restaurant.
For the next level down, I’d rank FatBurger ahead of Five Guys, and in the bottom tier, I’d put Whataburger or even In-n-out above BK, McD or Wendy’s.
