NATO flexes its muscles on Putin's doorstep: Alliance sends 30,000 troops, 50 vessels and 200 aircraft to Russian-neighbour Norway for military drills

NATO has sent tens of thousands of troops, including Royal Marines, an aircraft carrier, a destroyer ship and a nuclear-powered attack submarine to Norway, which borders Russia.

Troops from 28 countries in Europe and North America are taking part in an exercise lasting around a month, which began in northern Norway on Monday.

NATO member Norway shares nearly 200km (124 miles) of land border with Russia.

The drill, named Cold Response, is being held just a few hundred kilometres from the Russian border,

Around 35,000 troops, 200 aircraft and 50 vessels are involved in Cold Response, including roughly 900 Royal Marines who will spearhead the UK involvement.

They will raid along the jagged Norwegian coastline from an amphibious task group led by HMS Albion.

Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales will also take part and will be joined by frigate HMS Richmond, Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker and a nuclear-powered attack submarine escorting her.

The drills aim to show how a unified multilateral force would defend Norway and Europe's northern flank from a modern adversary.

The UK's participation in the exercises underlines Britain's commitment to security in Europe and forges closer bonds between NATO allies and partners.

'NATO as an alliance needs to be ready for anything, ready for all environments. It's essential for us to support Norwegian partners and that's why we train in the Arctic so often.

'Cold Response is an amazing opportunity for key NATO allies and partners to come together in the most challenging environment of the High North, prepare for any eventuality and learn to work together.

'What we'll see is a strong maritime task force and then land exercises. We will see many nations come together from the UK to Norway, the USA, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy.

You gotta realize wars are always fought in krapholes——muddy, cold, sand, dirt, snow, jungle, maybe all of the above. Nobody ever starts a fight in Malibu or FT Lauderdale.

“NATO constantly screwing with them caused this.”

Bullshit, its putin being a tyrant that caused all this, a man who is threating Nuclear war, the same man who jails his people even kids for protesting the war, who yanks kids of the street to be conscripts and 2 weeks later they are sent to hell and not even their families know of them, and now wants to bring in Syrian and African mercs as back up. I know the the US, and the West kinda sucks, but I think you need to quit sucking on Putins “you know what” if you get my drift.

You are pretty broad in defining ‘menacing behavior’. A free nation requests to join a like minded defensive alliance and that alliance ‘considers’ it for 30 years. That’s what you call menacing? Who forced anyone to be part of NATO?

Russia’s much smaller neighbors have been “menacing” them for near a millennium. Poor Russia. I don’t how the biggest country in the world can manage that.

It’s because the EU and the Biden Administration are not ready to reveal the west’s fleets of environment saving Attack Jets Helos, Aircraft Carriers, Submarines (with sea-life friendly, full lubricant and fuel capture), destroyers, and landing craft since they still are in early development...

Not normally but you can clearly see the linked .gov files unless you just ignored the link. Civilian casualties happen on both sides unfortunately. this isn’t the 1200s when war was engaged in open fields.

It’s WRONG for anyone to not want to be under the Russian thumb. Russia’s long history of brutal behavior toward it’s “occupied” territories, it’s corruption being one of the highest on earth, it’s oligarchic and oppressive regimes suppressing individual rights throughout it’s history, and not to mention being a virtual prisoner inside their borders is so nice.

Can’t imagine why nearly EVERY country that was ever under Russkie control runs as far from it as it can get...

KC-LB1’s Flying Lead Balloon battery chargers to reload an F-35-Model-E (Lightning III-LED), Drop Floating, Solar-Array Plug-in Services (Power-Penguin II), and 25 five mile reels of combat hardened extension cords. (First batch stymied by lack of 3-hole, round-tipped titanium prong model incompatible with central European service outlets. Adapter-Kit’s in rapid development.

remember Saddam’s Million Man Army. They were catastrophically defeated. The heavily armed but agile partisans in pickup trucks (later abandoned equipment) were deadly for years defending their people. Russia could win the prize and still count it as a loss.
