Its such an anachronism. I drove through NJ a couple years ago, and got berated by some guy when I unwittingly tried to pump my own gas.
Was it once a mafia racket that NJ politicians were trying to protect? If it was, it must have been a long time ago.
I am not sure how many other states have this program but I saw it in Oregon a few years ago.
...it must have been back in the 1970s, during the so-called fuel crisis, when we had to travel to New Joisey to visit relatives...stopped at a gas station and started to pump my own gas...we thought the attendant was either going to have a coronary or call the cops..... are the people of NJ too stoooopid to pump their own gas into their vehicles...?? amazing....
Is any other state as backwards as NJ?
If this “bipartisan” bill passes, folks in NJ should see a drop in gas prices. Stations will no longer have to pay gas jockeys.
I’ve been pumping my own for years...and years...and years....here in Upstate New York.
If this passes it will propel New Jersey right into the twentieth century!
In Jersey?
It could end the world
When I had a shiny new motorcycle and I pulled into a gas station in Jersey once to fill up the guy started to say something till I gave him ‘The Look’
I pumped my own.
It’s a tankless job, but someone has to do it.
Believe it or not self-service gasoline is a bad idea. The cost of universal service is negligible (maybe 1 cent per gallon?), and provides employment to people who can’t otherwise get any.
The Indian Mafia gonna be really pissed about that...
It’s a law from 1941 (I believe) and was passed because the State felt gasoline was too dangerous of a substance for the public to handle.
It has survived all these years just like other BS laws.
I haven’t been to a self serve gas station since 1979.
Welcome to the 21st Century NJ!...............
I wasn’t aware of this stupidity at the gas pump until one time I was in Oregon and tried to pump my own gas like I do everywhere else in the western US. The overqualified gas station attendant was quite irritated with me for not knowing that he had a special and totally useless government-mandated job.
The ‘soft bigotry of low expectations.’ The legislators paid by foreign elements contended that regular indigenous Americans were too stupid to figure out how to put a card in the pump and then put the nozzle in their own tank. It is all an excuse to keep gas prices high and to support foreigners who probably don’t even reside here legally.
I use to drive through MJ and thought it was stupid to not let people self serve.
One day I was on my way to Manhattan as it was raining
The moment I pulled into a gas station in Cherry Hill and thought: “ Genius!”
I let the attendant fill my tank while in the pouring rain as I relaxed nice and dry in my car...
Welcome to the 21st century. Heck, the rest of the world was pumping their own back in the 20th century.
To hell with full-service these days. I don’t need a guy in the elevator to push the buttons for me and don’t need someone I have to wait for to touch my car or bike. I decide when it’s full.
