US officials fear the worst is yet to come for Kyiv
CNN ^ | February 28th, 2022 | By Katie Bo Lillis, Natasha Bertrand and Barbara Starr

(CNN)Ukrainian forces have so far managed to stave off Russian ground forces massed less than 20 miles north of the embattled capital Kyiv -- but though they've defied US intelligence predictions that the city would likely fall within one to four days of a full-scale Russian assault, US officials warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin could imminently increase the intensity of the attack.

Stiffer than expected Ukrainian resistance and Russia's own logistical missteps have bogged down Russia's advance, US and western officials say, sparking a fragile optimism. The US has also continued sharing downgraded intelligence with the Ukrainians, including about Russian military moves, in an attempt to help Ukraine on the battlefield, two of the sources told CNN.

But intelligence and defense officials closely tracking the Russian campaign say that Putin still holds a number of moves in reserve that could devastate the Ukrainian resistance.

"From a purely military/tactical standpoint, Russia has the manpower and firepower to take Kyiv. No question," said an American source familiar with the intelligence. "And no matter how much resistance the Ukrainians put up."

Give it up, there is no value in speaking to them anymore, its really a damn shame, I think we need to stay out, but at least give Ukraine people them the tools to fight, and personally considering our “bad” foreign policy for the last so many years that made us lose most of our reputation that is the least we can do, feelings be damned.

The Russians are taking some very big hits in men and equipment. Their Chechen move backfired with the death of the entire battalion and its general. This was supposed to be a 72 hour walkover, even our good old General Milley said so.
It’s not over and I don’t see any fat ladies ready to sing.

Man, you’re taking it hook, line and sinker. You better cancel that check you sent for the Snake Island martyrs memorial. That was all BS too. Two years of more believable scamdemic lies have warped your BS meter all to hell.

The headline about says it all. Captain Obvious got it right at CNN. I do believe the Ukraines have punched back but are pretty much doomed. Russia has been inept but will win sort like we did in Afghanistan.

It is disheartening to watch intelligent Freepers change everything they and the entire world has believed about Russian military might for 75 years over 48 hours of obvious propaganda. One week ago EVERYONE was scared sh!tless about the Russian Army possibly being unleashed. After two days of Fox repeated lies, the Ukrainians are supermen and the Russian Army a befuddled paper tiger. Very sad.

I find it hard to discern what is really going on in the Ukraine. Obviously Russia invaded but the why, how is it going, and who is doing what. I don’t trust our media, Russia’s or the Ukraine reporting.

Anything CNN states, believe the opposite automatically.

Especially when they are quoting unnamed "US Officials".

It’s not bullshit - the bullshit is your narrative as I clearly explained.

If you think my post was wrong, then elaborate

Anyone who supports Putin in his attack on Ukraine is suffering from a lot of stuff.

Note - I supported Putin for his actions in Syria - however in this I definitively consider him wrong.

Viz “America’s allies”

On a daily basis, the U.S. and its allies share intelligence, train and exercise alongside each other, and operate common weapons systems, creating combined capabilities that far exceed any force the U.S. could wield on its own. America’s allies have fought alongside the U.S. in every significant military conflict since World War II. In Afghanistan alone, NATO allies have lost around 1,000 service members in support of coalition operations. U.S. allies also form the backbone of support for the global coalition to counter the Islamic State, which now numbers 81 partner nations.

America’s allies provide support for U.S. political priorities—such as sanctioning Iran and North Korea’s illicit weapons programs and providing financial support for reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Allies such as Japan are working together with the U.S. to advance fair and transparent international standards on issues such as digital governance and cyber security. And within the G-7, U.S. allies have coordinated to address issues ranging from the global refugee crises, to international health standards, and education for women and children.

All the various talk of “people dislike America” - is far less than any global hegemon has ever had. The British were despised when it was their day in the sun. The Soviets were feared, etc. etc.

Putin invaded.

Since 2004 he has constantly stated his desire to bring Belarus and Ukraine into Russia — all three are descendants of Kievan Rus.

That’s the why — it’s not about NATO as
1. Ukraine had a frozen conflict in the Donbas - that meant it couldn’t join
2. that red herring quickly disappeared from Putin’s narrative.

As to the HOW
- I’d suggest reading both sides and coming to your own conclusion.

Right now, 1st March - it is clear that
a. Putin hasn’t captured any cities
b. It has gained a lot of territory
c. Ukraine hasn’t surrendered
d. The ordinary people are rejecting any idea of “liberation” and are fighting for their country against invaders
e. Russian soldiers are going easy

Who is doing what — well on a case by case basis one can see, but I’d suggest reading RT, reading Telegram messages and others and not any one source. Then draw your own conclusions.

Correct. The only way Ukraine could "win" is if Putin gets assassinated.

Russia though has lost. It's lost its relationship with Ukraine, it has lost economically and it has internal dissent.

Wow, I asked a simple question and you went off, assuming an awful lot that isn’t true. At least you confirmed that Putin is a warmonger, according to your own words. Thanks.

Actually, it is black and white. Putin invaded another country’s sovereign territory, for the third time. It likely won’t be the last. Making NATO the boogie man is ridiculous.

My guess is that Team Putin has realized that they grossly miscalculated on the resolve of the Ukrainian people and how the world would be so sympathetic. The best thing for Putin to do if he wants his regime to survive is to retreat out to a defensible perimeter.

Well I’ll shut up as I really don’t care what happens to Putin. I think he deserves to burn in Hell and he deserves that in this life. But I’m not thinking about revenge. I’m thinking about freedom and peace in the long run and preventing unnecessary violence/suffering. I feel bad for all the dead soldiers, victims, and loved ones on both sides.

Poor little Russia. The biggest country on the planet and somebody is always picking on them. Murdering their smaller neighbors over and over is just self defense.
