Russia Issues Ominous Warning to Finland, Sweden Should They Join NATO
Newsweek ^ | 02/25/22 | Gerrard Kaonga

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has said that Moscow would have to respond if Sweden and Finland intended to join NATO.

Maria Zakharova held a press conference on Friday and reflected on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the intentions of Russia going forward.

A clip of her speech has begun to go viral on social media as she appears to issue a threat aimed at Sweden and Finland, saying it would have "serious military-political repercussions." The video has amassed over 300,000 views.

"Finland and Sweden should not base their security damaging the security of other countries," Zakharova said during the press conference.

"Clearly [the] accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO, which is first and foremost a military alliance, would have serious military-political repercussions that would demand a response from our country," she said.

This comes after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the country was receiving support from both nations.

"Discussed with [Finnish President Sauli Niinistö] countering the aggressor. Informed about our defense, insidious shelling of Kyiv," he wrote in a tweet on Friday.

"Grateful to [Finland] for allocating $50 million [in] aid. It's an effective contribution to the anti-war coalition. We keep working. We need to increase sanction and [Ukraine] defense support."

He later tweeted: "Sweden provides military, technical and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Grateful to [Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson] for her effective support.

"Building an anti-Putin coalition together."

The Twitter pages of the Finnish president and Swedish prime minister condemned Russia after hearing the news of the invasion of Ukraine.

"I strongly condemn the military measures Russia has started in Ukraine," Niinistö wrote in a tweet on Thursday.

Russia: Joining NATO isn’t healthy. Even with a mask and three jabs. Think twice.

Finland would make a much better fit for NATO than would Ukraine. Sweden has a good defense industry also.

But Finland or Sweden joining NATO is a red line for Putin.

Just remember, the KGB is the by far less competent intelligence agency in Russia. KGB is just the one that like to advertise itself. The real intelligence agency is the GRU.

--- "I hope Finland and Sweden choose to join NATO."

It would be most entertaining to watch how energy supplies would be affected.

"Per Statista, here are the countries most dependent on Russia for natural gas. The percentages tell us just how dependent:

North Macedonia (100 percent)

Finland (94 percent)

Bulgaria (74 percent)

Slovakia (70 percent)

Germany (49 percent)

Italy (46 percent)

Poland (40 percent)

France (24 percent).

100% this. If i were contemplating and was uncertain if it was needed, this would convince me that it absolutely IS needed.

No one is going to bust out their nukes over this mess, unless NATO actually does come to the rescue and tries to invade Russia. Then its a toss up.

Guess that means Russian tanks for Finland and Sweden.

Like the Rocky and Bullwinkle scene of oncoming military vehicles.

Rocky: "Tanks, Bullwinkle!"

Bullwinkle: "You're welcome, Rocky."

When I say ‘a guy from the KGB’ I mean an old guy who was trained old school. The KGB is of the past, much like Putin is.

Last time I looked, there were only 5 of the NATO partners who’d me their committed goals of supplying at least 2% of their GDP to support it. US, Greece, Estonia, Uk and Poland.

Notably, GERMANY and FRANCE were deficient, yet they feel they should control the EU, its advertised EDF and pontificate about European Security to the world. IICC, the US when I looked was near DOUBLE that goal commitment.

NATO is not going to invade Russia.

Nor will NATO let that little puke in Moscow dictate to us who can or cannot join NATO.

Many did and many did not. But we shouldn't forget that there were Americans and British who also "loved Hitler."

One more reason to support liberty wherever it may be found.

Ukraine has time on their side. If they hold out long enough, it starts becoming more that even if Russia prevails, it’s Pyrrhic Victory. And the Generals will start getting real nervous, and they may make their move against Putin.

Putin was counting on the quick knockout.

There is not a whole lot he could do about those countries joining...if the US had a competent leader.

(Putin will be assassinated) “By who?” Probably another guy from the KGB

Good possibilities. What do posters here think would happen in the absence of Putin?

New grandstander? Their version of AOC young nutjob with a big mouth? Peace creep? Most would-be rivals ended up shriveling up in slow death in a hospital bed or being identified by a single fingerprint left of them.

You are generally correct. The EU has been playing the US for a patsy, and lots of Democrats and Assistant Democrats are happy to be patsies — with someone else’s tax dollars.

The German press mostly had a very negative view of Trump when he made it an issue that Europeans -- and specifically Merkel and Macron -- meet their commitments. What? Us!

So was the stance of much of the German press at that time.
