Ohio Supreme Court strikes down congressional map, forcing another round of drawing

The Ohio Supreme Court struck down the state's congressional district map, saying Republicans violated the Ohio Constitution by drawing districts that favored GOP candidates.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor was, once again, a key vote in the 4-3 decision to reject the map, which would have given Republicans a 12-3 advantage in a state that leans Republican.

Maureen O'Connor is an American jurist and the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. Prior to this, O'Connor served as an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court and as the 61st lieutenant governor of Ohio, serving under Governor Bob Taft. She is an [Ohio] Republican.

Ohio Republicans are a whole 'nother country.

Democrat gerrymandering is always upheld. Courts have NO AUTHORITY in redrawing districts. The GOP should tell these four hacks to go to hell.

Is this the map that redistricted Jim Jordan out of his district?

"The GOP should tell these four hacks to go to hell."

Better not or it will end up like Pennsylvania where the court draws and imposes the map themselves.

The worst use of gerrymandering is for the purpose of promoting one race over the other.

Strangely, racial gerrymandering is the one type of gerrymandering usually approved by the courts.

~~~
Yes they should!
Ohio supreme court deemed Ohio’s property taxes to pay for schools to be illegal decades ago, and the State has ignored that! Why can’t they ignore this?
If the map posted above is the one they rejected, that’s ridiculous. The areas are contiguous, and they do not iregullarly hook or curl back on themselves. Some of them are long, but but they are not winding? What is wrong, for example, with all of the east border counties being together?
Okay, if that is the map they rejected, then I stand corrected. It’s rather easy to deem that gerrymandered.
Democrat gerrymandering is always upheld.
That is indeed the core problem. The reckless activism is 98.75 percent on the left, and the blatant asymmetry brings the whole process into contempt.
Districts should be created based on a formulaic approach.
Take the number of legal residents and divide by the number of seats to obtain the average number of residents (ANR).
Start with the capital building. Draw a circle on a map the size necessary to encompass the ANR. Adjust the circle to natural boundaries such as streets, waterways, and other easily identifiable boundaries so that it is aligned with the original circle as close as possible and ANR is maintained within 3%.
Repeat the above for the next district using the next largest population center in the state. Where boundaries are within 1 mile of two districts, normalize to one boundary. Repeat until you have 2 districts remaining.
Divide the remaining areas between the two districts.
Normalize all districts so that they are ANR +/- 2%
No, that's the CURRENT Ohio CD-4.
The new map up top is the rejected re-district.
Note that they key vote was the “republican”. There is never a swing vote on gerrymandering from a Judge who is a Democrat. She was lieutenant governor for Bob Taft which should tell us a lot.
“Democrat gerrymandering is always upheld. Courts have NO AUTHORITY in redrawing districts. The GOP should tell these four hacks to go to hell.”
Yep. Article I, Section 4, Clause 1:
“The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of choosing Senators.”
So unless there’s authorization by legislation, no other branch of government except the legislature is authorized to draw maps.
