Hannity, Fox face ethical issues over Trump text revelations

NEW YORK (AP) — For years, Sean Hannity has skirted ethical boundaries with his role on a television network with “news” in its name. Yet it’s never been as stark as now, with the committee investigating last year’s Capitol insurrection seeking his testimony.

The Jan. 6 select committee has revealed a series of texts where Hannity privately advised former President Donald Trump before, during and after the assault, and is seeking his insight about what happened in those days.

The popular Fox News Channel prime-time host hasn’t said what he will do, but he’s slammed the congressional probe as a partisan witch hunt. His lawyer has raised First Amendment concerns about the request.

It’s not unheard of for journalists to offer advice to politicians — history records Ben Bradlee’s friendship with former President John F. Kennedy — but such actions raise questions about their independence and allegiance to the public interest, said Jane Kirtley, director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota.

...Fox refers to him as an opinion host. In 2016, Hannity told The New York Times that “I never claimed to be a journalist.” A year later, he told the same newspaper that “I’m a journalist. But I’m an advocacy journalist, or an opinion journalist.”

He conducts interviews on his program, sometimes with people he’s been privately advising.

“He seems to consider himself a journalist when it suits his purposes and an entertainer when it doesn’t,” Kirtley said. “And he can’t have it both ways.”

Fox News executives have not immediately commented on the revelations of what Hannity has been texting Meadows or criticism about his or the network’s ethics.

:: the first amendment protects journalists and reporters ::

More correctly, the First Amendment - in its entirety - protects the individual conscience regarding public interaction.
It allows for all citizens to have an opinion, state it and have a free conscience in doing so.

It isn’t just some legal protection guidance for the courts.

Yup. AG Garland likely will try to prosecute Hannity.

Hannity is a Conservative commentator. No different than any commentator. Difference between Hannity and let’s say Anderson Cooper is Hannity admits he is a commentator while Cooper says he is a journalist.

His referred to Joe Rogan.

This only represents the 11 MILLION on average that subscribe to the JRE on Spotify. It does not include the people that watch his show when it is copied and posted to Rumble or YouTube(the shows they don’t censor).

He clearly and openly states his bias (as a conservative)

Can any of these other ‘journalists’ say the same?

The Founding Fathers never envisioned Fox News. So, maybe it’s time to consider “Common sense restrictions upon the 1st Amendment?”

With each passing day, the AssPress moves further down the path of Pravda and becoming nothing more than a DNC press release bot.

Notice that first sentence. That type of “writing” would have been absolutely off limits and edited out by a competent editor even a year ago.

People need to quit treating the AssPress like a legitimate news organization. They are far worse than CNN at this point.

You Hannity Haters on FR will no doubt be pleased as punch when Hannity is led away in handcuffs, never to be seen or heard from again. You're so stupid you fail to see the consequences of Hannity being forcibly removed from the airwaves.

You people who are always bitching about "no talent Vanity" can just go to hell. I'm sick of you. Flame away, tards.

LOL! CNN = “Cable News Network”

I guess AP will be doing an exposé on CNN...”The most trusted name in news”...tomorrow?

“I wonder if Hannity is a trained journalist? “

“What’s that?”

They are becoming extinct.

My auntie was a trained journalist, court reporter. Strong General Ed, English, Journalism, library sciences and research.

Back then they were on top of current office technology and stenography, typing, all, she called a short walk to paralegal or English teacher.

These days

“A journalism degree provides you with a range of core journalistic skills including researching, investigating, interviewing, reporting and writing, in addition to technical skills such as video, editing, shorthand, audio, content management and web design.”

Hannity remains a commentator.

It’s called opinion. Kirtley does know the difference between editorializing and journalism, doesn’t she/it/he? Editorial writers might sometimes commit journalism, but they are not there for the journalism, but for voicing their opinions. Ethical/shmethical. If you don’t know the fundamental principles, you ought to STFU, Kirtley.

This story is just the left trying to say everyone is like Chris Cuomo. Since they lost Chris Cuomo because of giving political advise to his corrupt brother, they want FOX to also lose someone.

Go Ted Cruz!
