‘If I run, he won’t’: Donald Trump downplays Ron DeSantis’ 2024 prospects
Florida Politics ^ | December 7, 2021 | A.G. Gancarski

'If he wanted to run, that's OK with me. I think we'd win by a lot.' Former President Donald Trump continues to say Gov. Ron DeSantis won’t run against him in 2024 and can’t beat him if he does, while reminding voters DeSantis wouldn’t be Governor without Trump’s endorsement.

During an interview with South Florida radio host Brian Mudd, Trump offered his latest in a series of statements essentially claiming he made the Governor and DeSantis knows better than to run against him in 2024.

“I do think if I run, he won’t,” Trump said. “I know they try and create a friction. I don’t think it exists at all. It might, you know, you never know. If he wanted to run, that’s OK with me. I think we’d win by a lot. But he’s good. And he’s done a good job as Governor.”

Trump also offered a new detail on his 2018 DeSantis endorsement, with Trump finding new ways to explicitly take credit for DeSantis’ victory.

“When Ron came to me, he was at 3%. And he had no money. And he asked for an endorsement. And I actually, you know, wasn’t too thrilled because … you know, he was very good, he helped me with the (Bob) Mueller hoax, because we had many hoaxes, and he was on television a lot,” Trump said. “But people didn’t relate him doing that as Governor. So when he announced for Governor, people didn’t really know who he was.”

“So when Ron asked me for help, for an endorsement.” Trump added, “He was at 3(%), and 3(%) means you don’t have a chance. He went up like a rocket ship.”

Trump noted DeSantis’ chief primary opponent, Adam Putnam, told him the endorsement was “like a nuclear weapon went off.”

Trump lost me with his jab crap. I don’t care at this point if it is that he’s controlled op, an idiot, or cares more about what he thinks others think about him than he does the health of hundreds of millions of Americans. Being a Pfizer and Moderna drug pusher at this point is beyond inexcusable.

......Meanwhile the only thing Trump said about the vaccines is that they are great and everybody should take them.

Yuge difference there and I agree. Trump was just a bit too blaise on the subject for me. Like he was too afraid he'd get called out and labeled an anti-vaxxer. So much for not being scared of political labels. Just like how he is keeping the J6's at arms length. Long length.

I agree with you, but think that a person is far more likable when they are not offensive and obnoxious.

Unfortunately Trump is deaf in this area. I know of countless people (some in my family) that can’t stand his personality but held their noses and voted for him because of the alternative.

He would be far more attractive to voters if he was humble and not so uncomfortably insensitive when it is unnecessary.

If Trump runs, I don’t think De Santis will run. Maybe as VP, but not as President.

If Trump runs, De Santis will enthusiastically back Trump.

I love Trump for how hard he fights, but there’s a point where we need a leader who fights smart as well as hard. For all the good Trump did he constantly picked twitter fights that he didn’t need to and appointed people who stabbed him in the back.

DeSantis has fought the right battles and has been treated nearly unfairly by the media as Trump. The difference is he knows how to answer unfair treatment with facts instead of name calling and has largely filled his staff with solid conservatives who have supported his agenda.

I love Trump, but DeSantis is a politician that knows how to win.

The podcast of that particular Brian Mudd Show is here:

Sounds like PDJT has a cold. There is less “drama” “in context” of the whole discussion. (Rather than sound bites).

The GOP has enough anti-Trumpers. Why alienate anyone that is pro-Trump? If Trump does run again, DeSantis wouldn’t dare run against him. Trump should know this and lose the “I made him” attitude.

Its not only a HUGE turn-off. It’s completely unnecessary.

Presumably no Kushners in a DeSantis WH.

Sold—I’ll take it!

Bingo. To me that was one the most single biggest issues I held against Trump and still do. This is especially true for his NY very limousine liberal loving daughter.

I can already tell DeSantis is a threat because every demonrat I know irrationally hates his guts to volume 11

Trump needs to be careful and watch his words. His lack of humility is a big turnoff and all conservatives love DeSantis.

Outside of Trump, what have these Republcan conservatives done in the last 3+ decades?

Reagan won 49 states with his theory that (paraphrasing) .... It does not matter who gets credit for something as long as that good thing gets done. Unfortunately Trump exhibits the opposite theory. He wants credit for everything no matter how tenuous, and seldom gives anyone else credit for anything.

Trump’s brash personality is both an positive and a negative. Without it, he would never have dared run for President. With it, he alienated many people, both potential voters and people he needs to works with. His children and wife all seem to be kind people. I can imagine that they have tried to reach Trump about his not-so-helpful behaviors. ... to no effect.

With Trump as POTUS, DeSantis would be the ideal VP. 4 years of Trump and 8 years of DeSantis, that is why. If Trump sees that he can’t win, DeSantis would be a fine president.

Problem is DeSantis is done in Florida in 2026 only two years after the presidency and Florida is two terms and done.
