The Times recently reported on the outcry following the L.A. theater community's Ovation Awards, where organizers mispronounced the name of an Asian American nominee and displayed a photo of the wrong actor.
If anyone doubts the racially based sting that comes with such insults to one's professional endeavors, just read the emails that rolled in to The Times after publication of our article. One reader said the Ovation reaction was just an example of "Asian victimhood."

One should blame the parents for being cute with a unique spelling. It had nothing to do with race.
My parents gave me an unusual spelling for a name so I have to specify it every time. Their stupidity.

I worked somewhere that had two physicians named Wong. At some point, someone sent him a piece of information that belonged to the other person.
My phone rang one day, and he identified himself, explained the issue, and said:
“I think you got the wong Wong.” Then he laughed, and I did too.
Good God. I would give a lot for a little sanity these days.
In my profession, I work hard at names, and I am someone people come to when they want to figure out pronunciation...I get pretty close most of the time, but not all.
If my pronunciation is wrong, I have no problem with being corrected, and I have no problem with outright asking someone how their name is pronounced.
Hahaha...I remember decades ago I had a patient, and when I went out to the waiting room for him, I was looking at his name, and the only pronunciation I could come up with was “Penis” and I thought “Crap, that can’t be right”, and I felt embarrassed to ask him how he pronounced it, so I took a stab at it and when I greeted him with a somewhat tortured pronunciation of his name...he stood up and said “It’s pronounced “penis”.
I nearly fell on the floor!

My name is Eastern European but anglicized to the point that it is perfectly phonetic - sounds just like it looks. Despite that, it is more frequently mispronounced than pronounced correctly. It does not bother me when someone mispronounces it. It bothers me a little when someone will not attempt to say it because it is “too hard.” It bothers me a little more when someone calls me by my first name when last name would be appropriate because they are afraid to attempt it. But none of it bothers me that much, because I grew up in a better time.

When my family came over from Ireland, as Scots-Irish, the family name was Mackenzie. But, from what the family tradition explained, due to my G-G-G Grandpa’s severe accent, he ended up with the name “Mackenzie Costley” ... the clerk misheard him and used the family name as his first name and a corrupted version of his hometown of Castleigh as the family name ... “Mackenzie Costley” ...
Last century Asians were raped and murdered by other Asians in the millions. Guess I’m just not impressed.

My maiden name is Eastern European and in spite of that, very phonetic and easy to pronounce and NOBODY ever got it right the first time.
