You are one of my big faves here you know. You are absolutely correct, ..again...as usual. I consider you the authority.

I understand that there is a split in the spike protein, that makes SARS-CoV-2 more transmissible than other RNA viruses. I understand it makes its own furin pathway which makes it more transmissible than SARS 1. What mechanism could account for greater transmissibility in this mutated strain?

SARS-Cov-2 has an error correction gene. However the Brazilians ran a Sanger sequence on their virus floating around over there and found a mutation which disabled the repair gene. I have been expecting this same mutation to happen in many places, and many new variants all of which will inevitably, due to natural selection, be less deadly.

Please correct me. I do not state to declare. I state whatever I do so that I may be corrected.

Link provided by 2aProtects was the answer to my question. As I expected they have found the disabling mutation in the stop protein. Changes and deletions in the spike protein optimize interaction with ACE2 receptor and diminish immune system response.

You confuse fear-induced subjugation with virtue. The mask mandate as it is implemented is a joke. A useless bandanna is considered adequate and is no barrier to a airborne virus. A a matter of fact masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients open would s from their mouth-borne germs — but those masks don't work to prevent inhaling diseases.

Researchers and health authorities do regular spot checking in collected samples looking for important mutations that have begun circulating. This isn't the first significant variation in SARS-CoV-2 and it won't be the last. There was a new variant (614G - referring to the site of the mutation) that increased the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 and which was discovered in March. By April, the original version (614D) was almost completely replaced around the world because of how much better 614G was at spreading. More on that one here. The variant discovered in minks has changes that might have impacted immunity. Rather than risk that version jumping to humans, mass slaughter of minks in Europe were done.

In other words, this latest one is just that: the latest one. We'll continue seeing changes. They're tracked by checking samples and looking for changes. If you see changes that appear significant, you can test them on animals that give a good idea of how that variant behaves in humans and you can see how the changes impact our populations.

That's a really interesting question and I think the short answer is "no". The more complete answer requires a bit more background on the immune system.

Your immune system has two basic groups of defenses: the nonspecific defenses and the custom biowarfare bits that essentially use targeted smart weapons designed for the specific invader. Whenever anything foreign invades your body, it's initially identified and attacked by macrophages (big immune cells that basically swallow and dissolve the invader) and neutrophils (which dump toxins into the region of infection to basically just kill everything). If macrophages and neutrophils can't handle things on their own, macrophages signal dendritic cells to come help. Dendritic cells take samples of the invader back to lymph nodes and start the process of activating specific types of T-cells. Those T-cells in turn activate B-cells, which then produce antibodies, which attach to the invader and disable them. These are essentially smart bombs that flood your system and wipe out most invaders that the nonspecific immune system can't handle. Certain types of T-cells (Natural Killer T-cells) will also identify infected body cells and essentially order them to commit suicide.

This is a gross oversimplification of a truly incredible system. There's a wonderful series of videos on the human immune system here, here, and here. I really can't recommend these too much as they're entertaining and informative.

So why does any of this matter? Well, an infection spreads very quickly, particularly for a virus like SARS-CoV-2. We aren't talking about 50; we're talking about billions of virions (estimated 1 billion - 100 billion virions in a single infected host). Do those who show symptoms have fewer virions present than those who do not? Possibly, but we don't know. If they do, to what extent? Probably not by as much as you might think.

RT-PCR tests don't pick up a fresh infection. On day 1 of infection, there's basically a 100% chance the infection will be missed by a PCR test. By day 4, there's still a 67% chance of a false negative. You need a LOT of infection before you actually get a positive result. This is a limitation of RT-PCR testing. We aren't getting a full and complete picture of what's going on in ever corner of your lungs, nose, throat, mouth, and sinuses. We're getting a small surface sample from the nasal cavity. By day 8 of infection, there's still a 21% chance of PCR testing missing it.

For all the talk here of everyone and everything showing up positive for no reason, it's actually pretty difficult to get a positive result even if someone IS infected. Someone not showing symptoms doesn't mean their immune system kicked the virus out the second it showed up. It just means they aren't showing symptoms. There is a growing body of evidence showing that about half of people who show no symptoms still have varying degrees of lung damage following COVID-19 infection source, source2). Important to note there that the damage to the lungs is typically healing quickly.

And the biggest point here should be that while we don't know everything about COVID-19 yet, we do know most of what we need to know. We know how it spreads. We know how it harms people. We know how quickly it spreads and who is most at risk for complications from it. We have multiple treatment options to help those with severe symptoms. And we have multiple vaccines already being rolled out with more coming.

This is NOT worth a panic. It's worthy of serious response and reasonable measures from individuals to reduce the risk of transmission. It's worthy of more significant protection for the most vulnerable. But it's absolutely not worth panic or economic self-destruction.
