Afghanistan troop withdrawal could lead to terrorist attacks on US, allies: NATO chief
The Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, November 17, 2020 | Ben Wolfgang

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday signaled opposition to President Trump’s plan to pull more U.S. troops out of Afghanistan and he cautioned that “leaving too soon” could lead to terrorist strikes against America and its allies.

In a statement, Mr. Stoltenberg said all NATO allies are eager to leave Afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war, but he stressed that a withdrawal must only happen when “the time is right” on the ground. His comments come after reports that Mr. Trump will soon issue formal orders to cut the number of American forces in Afghanistan from 4,500 to about 2,500.

Mr. Stoltenberg’s comments echo those of critics in the U.S., including some Republican lawmakers, who fear that an early American exit could represent a serious national security threat and could recreate the conditions seen in Afghanistan during the run-up to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“We now face a difficult decision. We have been in Afghanistan for almost 20 years, and no NATO ally wants to stay any longer than necessary,” Mr. Stoltenberg said in a statement, a copy of which was provided to The Washington Times. “But at the same time, the price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high. Afghanistan risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands. And ISIS could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it lost in Syria and Iraq.”

Didn't they say before that the U.S. being overseas was recruitment for terrorist organizations? So now leaving causes terrorism? What doesn't cause it then?

So long as the US isn’t attacked, who cares?
Most of our allies suck. Maybe they will starting taking steps to provide for their own security.

obama paying the Iranians $150 billion only encourages them to build nuclear weapons to kill millions but that is ok.

No worries, Mr. Stoltenberg, we will leave you behind with the same "weapons of war" Obama/Biden would have you use.

Pull the troops out now. Other NATO countries can follow our lead. If they don't, perhaps they should reinforce their own troops. Then, if they don't do that, just plain tough schiff.

We should have been out of Afghanistan a month after first going there. We were quite capable of laying waste to the entire country. It would serve warning to all our enemies. Muslim Lives Do Not Matter.

Lol. Those oh so superior Europeans are just ragged beggars. F*** you Europe. You created the “Great Game”. You fix it.

The globalists and arms industry know full well that our presence ends up being a recruiting tool for jihadis. DemocRATs are either fools or knowing enemies.

“leaving too soon” could lead to terrorist strikes against America and its allies.

************

Time then for our so-called allies to step it up and assume responsibility (and the costs) of defending themselves. We can’t be their protectors in perpetuity.

I feel sorry for those in the U.S. military who have the thankless job of risking their lives to defend allies who are nothing but selfish ingrates. Dying for those who refuse to defend themselves makes no sense.

I rather disagree. The mask thing suddenly became THE THING when we were claiming it should be illegal for ANTIFA to wear masks. Amazing that. ;)

Yes they did. It's not like there's very many troops there anyway.

The initial mission was a small detachment - maybe a reinforced brigade - that rotated among NATO countries. This detachment was stationed in Kabul. If the President of the so-called country wanted to rule beyond the palace walls, it was up to him to figure out how to do it.

As a practical consequence, the area on the map described as Afghanistan was nothing more than so many tribal regions.

Then W got the bright idea that we could re-make Afghanistan as a liberal democracy; and, O thought further we could do that on a timetable. So, we went from dumb to dumber.

Fourteen years after W’s brain spasm, and ten years after O’s, the place remains so many tribal areas, and this asshole from Germany thinks we (the U.S.) shouldn’t pull out prematurely.

What about NATO assuming responsibility. I’d be o.k. with a more or less permanent brigade hq and one battalion, if our “allies” in NATO ponied up two or three additional battalions on a rotating basis.

One more thing, maybe we could divvy up responsibility for the so-called foreign aid that goes directly into the Swiss bank accounts of whoever are the President and the Vice President of Afghanistan.
