RUSSIA is planning to equip military helicopters with swarms of terrifying suicide drones which can be sent on pre-programmed missions, raising the prospect of a new era of remotely waged warfare, sources within Vladimir Putin's country have claimed.

The helicopter gunshop Mi-28NM is being fitted with drones which Russia will be able to fire from missile launch tubes, an insider told state news agency Tass. The source said: "Built-in instruments transmit information from the helicopter's weapons control system to the payload, be it controlled detonation missiles, guided missiles, mini-drones or suicide drone

Suicide is a self inflicted human death. Homicide is a human death inflicted by another person.

Since the drones are not manned with human pilots, they are not suicide weapons

I remember being a kid and we had cassette tapes and I was on HAM radio talking about how microchip based music storage was the way of the future and that was in the late 80s. Things happened so fast with computers/media that it’s hard to remember that some tech takes a few gens to get right.

You can’t get much more demoralizing.

Yes you can.

Watching this conflict between Armenia and Azerbajian alot of the kills are from drones. Afraid that's the future of warfare.

I think Trump and Putin probably understand each other very well. It would be amusing to let them swap places for a month and see what each does. Especially if some of our press starts dropping dead of COVID 19 as found by the newly appointed chief pathologist for the newly appointed FBI director.

I’m pretty sure any guided missile would be considered a “suicide drone”...

I *think* phantomworker was putting a COIL laser on a 747.

After successful testing of a megawatt version, and shooting down two target missiles, the program was canceled under the obama administration.

Actually, no. You could make drones that pinpoint deliver nerve gas and bio agents on people, air vents, into chimneys, through open doors or building and moving vehicle windows it could shoot out.

True, but I think a cheap neutron bomb or flat out 450kt is a lot cheaper/easier way to kill an entire city.

Even tank air intakes and gun muzzles could be targeted.

Well, minority report was a very good sim of the 2050’s with remote hunter killer bots. If they can perfect something like that, it can be used by local or national govs to wipe out the ‘bad guys’ pretty fast.

I was mostly talking about killing an entire city vs picking out targets. Former is better with nukes, latter with AI.

You may not want to use nukes. This is scarier. You may want to get at dispersed populations and troops in hardened positions. You could silently get rid of North Korea’s front line artillery in caves along the entire border before anyone knew there was a war.

I bet there’s kind of a ‘dead man’s switch’ on their artillery though, a few bases go down, full launch on Seoul.

The movie it’s a remake of the day the earth stood still comes to mind. Micro sized self replicating robots devouring all organics for food and metals to replicate. Stargate Atlantis had the “replicators” that did the same thing eat metal and replicate exponentially which was bad...very bad. Killer robots are already here the Russians have an airborne quad copter that carries a 5.56mm machine gun , they also have one that can carry a 9mm pistol hitting human sized targets from hundreds of feet away. Google Russian terminator with Glocks...They have a bipedal robot duel wielding functional Glock handguns hitting targets it’s just like the terminator movie looking. Our own DARPA has a dog and pack mule sized autonomous drones as well as sparrow and beetle sized drones. Those boffins also created EATER which is a drone that “harvests” biomass to fuel itself they assured everyone it’s purely vegetarian uh yeah ok sure walk right by all the dense fat and proteins of bodies that have three times the every density of plant materials on the battlefield.

That would require artillery automation not even we have. Somebody has to load the breeches.

I considered them pretty much ‘alert/fire’ automatons. I think a com breach for them would be pretty obvious if a few bases are blown up first. It would have to be a very simultaneous attack against them to work.

I know the USSR had that planned simul nuke hits against the Minutemen and Peacekeeper sites to mitigate the effect of ‘blinding’ for spaced out ICBM sites. I’m sure we did the same and that was awhile ago.

They wouldn’t be blown up. Their crews would be killed, probably with gas.
