The Nation, a storied left-wing magazine, pondered the possibility of secession in an interview published Tuesday morning.
The idea has been circulating on the left over the past few weeks, as Democrats ponder the possibility of President Donald Trump being re-elected. Though many mainstream media polls show former Vice President Joe Biden with a lead, the polls have been wrong before and Trump is running a confident, energetic campaign, while Biden is barely leaving his house.
The interview, Should the United States Stay United?, conducted by Jessica Suriano with Richard Kreitner, author of Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of Americas Imperfect Union, focuses on the idea that secession need not be tarnished by slavery. Abolitionists, Kreitner argues, also considered seceding from the Union and progressives should consider it today:
JESSICA SURIANO: Why did you think it was important in this book to address all of these other separatist movements that have happened in the past and across the political spectrum?
RICKY KREITNER: Of course everybodys heard about the Confederacy and slavery, and it started my historical research, but thats not really where the book came from. It came from this late-Obama-era moment where the thought occurred to me just based on things Id been reading: What if the United States broke apart? Would that be such a bad thing? Is it possible that the progressive policies and programs that I wanted to see put into place might be easier to enact in a smaller entity than the United States, with its 330 million people and the need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests? So with that question...

The more i read from you, the more i can tell you just want the easy way
out. Have at it. Ride the coat tails of the ones who want to do this the
right way. This is headed toward a shooting war and id rather it happen
while I can still fight. Cede the land to the left without a fight? Brilliant
idea bro. Brilliant.......
If you look at the counties Trump won, then NY, PA, NJ, VA, & FL would have the same problem—in state civil war.
Heck, even Illinois went almost 40% for Trump. Almost all the blue votes came from the Chicago area. The rest of the state won’t quietly sit by and allow Chicago to force them to leave the union.
As far as I can tell, Mass, Vermont, Conn, & RI are the only states that had more blue counties than red. Every other state (even CA) is dominated by red counties.
If “Blue” states seek to secede from the USA, expect the “Red” areas of these states to secede from them. There’s no way the “Blue” states could prevent this. Most “Blue” states are “Red” but sadly controlled by a small geographic area with large population.
Why do you want a civil war when a peaceful state(s) secession is not only possible buy likely? LEAVE CA!!!! Sorry you are old and set in your ways but leave anyway.
Look at the county maps.
Look at the electoral maps by voting patterns.
Secession just turns one mess into two messes.
We need to be honest with ourselves—there is _no_ good solution.
NO, If there is a referendum and states want to leave then they leave. There will be no nationwide civil war WHICH IS A GOOD THING. If there is war/strife inside a few states that have left the union so what? I DON’T CARE.
A group of Democrat states tried that in 1861, it didnt work out well for them.
States will have referendum on leaving the union, The majority wins, get it. You don't like it pack your sh!t and git. No civil war is desired or necessary.
“They bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say...let ‘em crash.”
I did not say nation wide civil war.
I said a civil war within the state—for control of the state government (and thus control of leaving or staying).
“Brilliant. The Chinese will be salivating to extend their Belt and Road into the blue archipelago.”
That can’t happen. CA would join NATO...........(s)
A peaceful session of the blue states would be a God send. Anyone lifting a finger to stop them form leaving becomes my enemy. Call me a Neo-Copperhead if you want to. I’ll wear that moniker with pride.
Exactly.
I can tell you, my relatives in suburban Buffalo would love that idea.
Until they find out all the fun federal give aways go bye bye! Then they will be moving to Florida and scewing up that state.
Don't care if Yankees, liberals, socialists and losers kill each in their blue country. So be it . Have a it or not, work it out peacefully. Popcorn anyone?
California, Washington Oregon and New York have already seceded. They became sanctuaries and abrogated other federal law. They in effect seceded by the abrogation.
In the instance of California, the President should declare martial law and take over and abolish the California state government. The act will reduce California to territorial status with no representatives in Washington DC. Most state/federal interaction can continue as determined by the territorial governor/appointees.
The action toward the other seceded states need not be so drastic if they actually come back into the union on their own accord.
I fully understand that there are many good strong conservative counties and people in California that will be affected. One can only hope that they can come forward with the leadership required to overcome the antiAmerican trash that resides in the cities and has actually, in reality, destroyed what was once a wonderful place.
No, they get whole states. It you dont like it leave. m Otherwise there will be war when one is unnecessary.
I agree with you in theory, but i can promise you the people of say eastern oregon will not leave their state, their ranches, etc. behind and would be ‘insurgents or rebels’ against the new blue country.
Same is probably true for california, washington, minnesota probably NY state, etc.
If it would not raise so many annoyances, I’d gladly be rid of them. But if I stayed at home I’d be behind enemy lines!
Thats how I could envision a geographic basis for civil war. Divisions within blue States...pro-and anti-secession. Youd better believe that 75% or more of the populated land-mass in CA, OR, and WA want nothing to do with forced separation from the USA. See the various iterations of State of Jefferson, or Greater Idaho proposals of the last 50 years.
agree, the red parts of their states are not just going to leave their ranches, land holdings, livelihoods etc. and immigrate back the USA. Many would want to secede from the state that seceded. If/when Trump wins, I think we’ll get to see how all of this plays out because I do think it possible, even likely, some states like California (where this red/blue dynamic is pronounced) try to secede.
New York too. But who will be responsible for building the walls or other barriers to prevent the free transit from one to another? Us, to keep THEM out, or them, to keep THEM in?
