Left-wing ‘Nation’ Ponders Seccession of Democrat-run States
Breitbart ^ | 9/29/20

Posted on 09/29/2020 7:22:30 AM PDT by Altura Ct.

The Nation, a storied left-wing magazine, pondered the possibility of secession in an interview published Tuesday morning.

The idea has been circulating on the left over the past few weeks, as Democrats ponder the possibility of President Donald Trump being re-elected. Though many mainstream media polls show former Vice President Joe Biden with a lead, the polls have been wrong before — and Trump is running a confident, energetic campaign, while Biden is barely leaving his house.

The interview, “Should the United States Stay United?“, conducted by Jessica Suriano with Richard Kreitner, author of Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of America’s Imperfect Union, focuses on the idea that secession need not be tarnished by slavery. Abolitionists, Kreitner argues, also considered seceding from the Union — and progressives should consider it today:

JESSICA SURIANO: Why did you think it was important in this book to address all of these other separatist movements that have happened in the past and across the political spectrum?

RICKY KREITNER: Of course everybody’s heard about the Confederacy and slavery, and it started my historical research, but that’s not really where the book came from. It came from this late-Obama-era moment where the thought occurred to me just based on things I’d been reading: What if the United States broke apart? Would that be such a bad thing? Is it possible that the progressive policies and programs that I wanted to see put into place might be easier to enact in a smaller entity than the United States, with its 330 million people and the need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests? So with that question...

***pondered the possibility of secession***

I believe the Dems tried that way back in 1861-1865.

Then in 1869, Salmon P. Chase put the icing on the cake by declaring that secession is impossible. Texas v. White, 74 U.S. (7 Wall.) 700 (1869)

https://www.scotusblog.com/2017/10/chief-justice-salmon-chase-permanency-union-cynthia-nicoletti-chases-political-ambitions/

However, if the seceding states have enough guns to make the separation stick...but remember they are democrats.

The Confederacy used this same threat: if Lincoln wins we are leaving.

Now it's: if Trump wins we are leaving.

Unlike the Civil War (where the populations of the states that chose to leave were largely united), the residents of modern states would be split. Even 1/3 of Californians voted for Trump in 2016. My guess is at least 45% in CA would be opposed.

Looking at a red vs blue state map, they would probably have to split off into multiple countries because of the distances. Would Washington and Oregon want to be tied to (and dominated by) California in a new country?

From a red state perspective, I'd say let them go. Move the red state capital to Kansas City--right in the center--and move on.

Funny how “Conservatives” in blue states always hate the idea of state secession. I wonder why.

Looking at the map, which states would split, and would they have to split into multiple countries?

Cant be done, because the communists in LA, SF, Seattle, and Portland would give the communist Chinese bases on US soil.

Oh BS . The blue state country, lets call it the USSA, would be an immediate member of NATO.

If Oregon or Washington tried to succeed, you’d have an internal civil war among the residents of those states.

There are legitimate reasons to oppose state secession but this China angle is nutty.

I am a conservative in commiefornia and I don’t think we can just hand

ANYTHING over to the left because of the unintended consequences that most aren’t think-

ing of right now. Id rather fight to eject the communist scum from the land.

This is all moving toward a shooting war with the left anyway. Time to

face the inevitable.........

Brilliant. The Chinese will be salivating to extend their Belt and Road into the blue archipelago.

I live 3,000 miles away from them. Let them fight it out. I don't care and don't want be involved. That is the point of it. They have their problems we have ours.

The main difference I see is in 1860, Lincoln was not on the ballot in the Southern States, so they had no choice in the matter as Democrat Breckinridge won those states.

A Conservative in a blue state is worthless as tits on a mule. Leave there. Let CA go. Stop it with kooky ideas. You are groping, reaching for straws. This God forsaken union from HELL is over. The union must split up.

"In the real world, the map is not the territory. There are many hard-core conservatives in states ruled by leftists (as I raise my hand) and there are many hard corp lefties (particularly in the urban areas) of states ruled by conservatives. The divide is mostly urban and inner suburban vs outer suburban and rural in most states."

I totally agree. We own property in two states that fit your description, and my elderly mother lives in a third. These are places of great natural beauty, natural resources, and a lot of really wonderful people. They are being harmed by a combination of leftist true believers and electoral cheating which I strongly suspect represent a minority of these states. Secession doesn't solve the problems of these rat-holes and subjects a lot of excellent US citizens to ongoing corruption. The mass movement of people involved in re-location would be very disruptive to communities, families, businesses, etc. Beyond the immediate disruption, I don't believe for a minute that the leftists would be satisfied with this. Once they ran their states further into the ground, they'd be looking to move into the conservative states, just as they do now.

I'm laughing at those who believe any resolution with the Left can be peaceful. First...do you seriously propose to negotiate with the Left?

---The Left does not negotiate, but issue demands.

---They adhere to only one rule...what's theirs is theirs, what's ours is...negotiable.

---Rule 1(b) is that negotiations are final until they decide they need to renegotiate...then, see Rule 1(a).

---Because of the nature of the Left, they will be unable to deliver on any 'commitments' they make.

I live in Washington State, westside. I'm a US citizen. I'm not going anywhere, and any part of the US is not theirs to take. I'd much rather be a monkey wrench in their machinery...anonymously, of course.

Those who think there can be a peaceful resolution do not understand the nature of our disagreement...and fail to grasp the fundamentals of the host/parasite relationship.

Then there's the fundamentals of human nature...you get more of that which you reward. Let them declare, then come in with a heavy boot, military trials for the leadership, re-education camps for the rest. And...clean house. This ends, NOW.

Democrats tried that before. It was right before a republican President freed their slaves. Now another Republican is freeing thought slaves and they democrats are up to their old tricks.

Last time, it cost this nation an estimated 620,000 deaths (just under 2%). Roughly equal to all other war deaths COMBINED.

Not hard to see what china is doing all over the world by going to poor

countries and “loaning” money and building infrastructure. Think they are

doing that out of the kindness of their hearts? And you don’t think the

politicians in Sacramento wouldn’t welcome that?

A country made up of just CA,WA and OR would surpass all but maybe Germany, Japan and China in GDP.
