I think of his wealth and wonder how the hell he became so wealthy being that stupid.

It was luck / good timing that made him wealthy. Mark Cuban created broadcast.com in the 90s and then sold it to Yahoo for billions. Yahoo then did nothing with it and the domain just redirects to yahoo.com to this day.
