Ransomware feared as possible saboteur for November election

WASHINGTON — Federal authorities say one of the gravest threats to the November election is a well-timed ransomware attack that could paralyze voting operations. The threat isn’t just from foreign governments, but any fortune-seeking criminal.

Ransomware attacks targeting state and local governments have been on the rise, with cyber criminals seeking quick money by seizing data and holding it hostage until they get paid. The fear is that such attacks could affect voting systems directly or even indirectly, by infecting broader government networks that include electoral databases.

Even if a ransomware attack fails to disrupt elections, it could nonetheless rattle confidence in the vote.

At first glance, I read that as, "Ransomnote feared . . ."

Must pay closer attention here.

Yer quite formidable, anyway.

We have some absolutely brain-dead politicians.

1. There should NOT be any internet connection to any voting machine.
2. No voting machine should be running windows.

There is no need for either one of those.

Optical scan machines with Paper Ballot backup.

If those in charge of elections knew anything about network security, this would be nearly impossible.
The Elite stay in power by appointing other politicians to solve problems.

Ballots with voter printouts of the votes they cast tabulated by systems not connected to the net and not accessible by anyone but certain select officials would go a long way to thwarting Ransomeware threats.
Here in Florida, in my county they utilize voting machines that scan our ballots but, the voter receives nothing but an I voted sticker. This is disconcerting and should never be allowed. Every voter should receive a printout of the scanned result.

Yep, paper ballots can always be hand counted by candlelight if necessary.

Sometimes, old school is the best school.

Furthermore, there is no damn reason that counting has to be done as fast as possible through the dead of night.

Elections should not done by computer software except to add the results sent in by the individual polling places.Even Then all of those numbers and sums should be checked by other watch dogs. No voting machines should have microchips. Way too easy to cheat and leave no trace.

We should be voting in person. Masks, physical distancing, whatever, we could do it. Voters should bring clothing or whatever other protection (e.g., umbrellas) for waiting outside during inclement weather, but we could do it. We don’t need computerized elections or mail-in ballots.

But it is what it is. If you send a mail-in ballot, be sure to get it to the poll early. Take it in person if possible. Late ballots won’t be counted.

I know technology is wonderful and all that, but i don’t see any reason why election database information needs to be on the internet.

We held elections for two centuries plus before internet technology even existed. We can conduct elections and maintain voter databases etc. without it being online somewhere.

And given issues we’ve seen in some elections, paper ballots give a certain security to the whole process.

Why have we abandoned paper ballots? To get quicker results? But then, how do you explain how some elections in recent years were left hanging without results for weeks after election day, if computerized technology is so superior?

Since our governor locked down Ark, wear a mask or be fined, I have seen a complete turn around from folks not wearing to total compliance but the stores also have more customers out and about. Which says that there is no reason for mail in voting unless it is the standard absentee balloting. There is also early voting in this state so voters can avoid crowds by the in person voting a week or so ahead of the usual Tues vote. We have done the early voting for years and will do so this time around. Hate the masks but rebelling is not worth the aggravation or cost. Flue season is not far off and so the masks can be continued for that or other seasonal things like allergies to pollen and dead leaves and on and on. No end in sight.

The deep state criminals running and working in the CIA and the FBI more than likely already have their thugs staged to electronically crash a Trump win.

They'll probably have the Awan brothers running the show.
