Fort Hood sergeant says he shot and killed armed Black Lives Matter protestor

An active-duty Army sergeant from Fort Hood says he was the one who shot and killed a man at a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas, last weekend, according to the sergeant's attorney.

Sgt. Daniel Perry said he fired at Garrett Foster out of self-defense after Foster allegedly raised an assault rifle toward Perry, according to a statement from the attorney obtained by The Washington Post.

According to the statement, Perry was driving for a ride-share company in downtown Austin on the night of July 25 when he turned a corner toward a protest he did not know was taking place.

At that point, the attorney says protesters began beating on Perry's car. Foster then allegedly approached the car window holding an assault rifle.

The attorney said that Foster gestured with the gun for the driver to roll down the window, and Perry did so because he "initially believed the person was associated with law enforcement."

Perry realized Foster was not an officer, after which Foster allegedly raised his rifle at Perry. The attorney said Perry perceived that as "a threat to his life" and fired at Foster using a handgun he kept in his car.

Police said last weekend that the shooting victim was transported to a hospital and announced dead shortly thereafter.

According to the Post, blurry cellphone footage shows protesters outside Perry's stopped car. Honking can be heard followed by gunshots, along with a woman yelling that "a car just ran over somebody."

Perry's attorney said that the Army sergeant has served in the military for eight years, including a tour in Afghanistan. He is not facing any charges at this time, the Post reported Friday.

A disabled person I know pointed out that the disabled fiancee might very much have wanted to participate in the demonstrations.

And she is so much lighter to throw over your shoulder if you have make a run for it.

The only photo I found of him in uniform was in front of the Alamo his Girl friend in a wheelchair.

Something is wrong about Garren life story and girl friend in a wheelchair. He only work in the Air Force until the age of 19, he was barely in the Air Force. He does not have any stripes in the photo in front of the Alamo.

Is this a from a day pass from Basic Training? The USAF would give you a day pass to see the town when you were near the end of Basic training.

The numbers do not add up. Was his girl friend in a wheelchair before he enter the Air Force? Can anybody make out the ribbons?

If he was in for a year he should have at least one stripe this is why I believe the photo is from Basic training.

lefty site with photo of him in uniform

There is a very “uncanny valley” picture of the two of them in the article. Midface enlarged by the lens, and skin made weirdly plastic-smooth by software.

Judging by the haircut and no stripes, I would say this is right after Basic graduation. I went there after Basic, and also had no stripes.

“It’s exactly what the government spends tens of thousands of dollars training him to do.”

LOL, you’re more than right. The LOL is here because the fortunately flushed traitorous turd said he’d not ever point his AK at a cop because he’d be instantly killed but it was fine to do with a mere “pussy.” Unfortunately for him his first “pussy” turned out to be better combat trained than the average cop. That’s the beauty of CCW: the potential perp never knows when he’s going to step on a live land mine. Message to perp wannabes in every CCW jurisdiction: don’t do it unless you want to die.

The caption says the rifle barrel is pointed towards the ground, but it doesn’t look that way to me.

I think she was in a wheelchair before he enters the military. I do not think he was discharged to be her primary care provider; they would have to be married for that to approved.

I think he was kick out of the military under administrative separation. If a person has less than two years of service, they can be administrative separation, he was a problem child or could not do his job. He never made it out of school most likely.

The family and the media are telling a lie.

Same here. The rifle in the shoulder pocket places the riffle in the ready position. He looks like he is playing GI joe sweeping an area for something to shoot. He meet a real GI.

Here in South Texas it often seems as if EVERYONE is carrying a gun.

Recently, I was shopping at a HEB supermarket when a woman ran up to a uniformed LEO, who was “working security” at the store & exclaimed, “That guy over there, in the green shirt, is carrying a pistol!!”

The LEO responded, “Ma’am, This is TEXAS & YES, he most likely is.”
The LEO politely did NOT say, “You’re not from here, are you?”
(I just HAD to chuckle “under my breath”.)

Yours, TMN78247

They met ih high school and got engaged when they turned 18. While he was gone in the military she got an infection that caused her hands and feet to be amputated.

She was the one who wanted to go to protests. Regrets are bitter, I am sure.

A very sad story all around, but the moral of the story is play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Wow, thank you.

You can clearly see that the guy’s arm is up, his elbow pointed towards the back like he’s holding a gun to someone and is getting ready to fire.
