Giants' pitcher Sam Coonrod refuses to kneel during Black Lives Matter moment because of faith: 'I'm a Christian'

San Francisco Giants pitcher Sam Coonrod was the only player to stand during a moment honoring the Black Lives Matter movement ahead of the season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, telling reporters after the game that as a Christian he “can’t kneel before anything besides God.”

MLB provided teams with a long black ribbon that players on both sides jointly held as they kneeled in unity.

Every player and coach from the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees took part in the demonstration ahead of their game, but hours later, Coonrod stood alone.

I’m a Christian," he said, according to TMZ Sports. “So I just believe that I can’t kneel before anything besides God.”

Aside from his religious beliefs, the 27-year-old relief pitcher said there are aspects of the movement that he disagrees with.

"I just can’t get on board with a couple things I’ve read about Black Lives Matter, how they lean towards Marxism,” he continued. “And … they said some negative things about the nuclear family. I just can’t get on board with that.”

Team manager Gabe Kapler, who kneeled during the ribbon ceremony as well as during the national anthem, said he respects Coonrod’s decision to stand.

"The one thing that we said is we were going to let people express themselves,” Kapler said. “We were going to give them the choice on whether they were going to stand, kneel or do something else. That was a personal decision for Sam.”

Yeah. Satan saw me kneeling and thought he had won until he heard me say “Amen”.

Does this Christian think that God doesn’t know that he is using God as cover? Foolish man.

A cover for what? This man claims to be a Christian and by words out of his own mouth seems to stand by what he states. Are you saying that most people are not to be trusted and are probably lying? What about you? By your own logic and observation I guess I should most likely believe you are a hypocrite and a liar? Would that be fair? Judge others by the measure that you are being judged by.

“He’ll find himself on the chopping block at first opportunity.”

And if he does, he will be graded on his performance rather than his politics. In two years, obviously abbreviated, he has thrown in 31.2 innings in 37 games as a middle relief guy at the major league level. He has given up only 14 runs and has 22 strike outs to accomplish his job of holding so his team can score runs to get ahead. His MLB record indicates he is good at it as it is 5 wins versus 1 defeat which means he held the opposing team so his team could win and failed one time in 37 games.

He plays for my team.

“Using God as an excuse, to stand up to peer pressure.”

Sending this to yourself?

Not everything is an excuse. Sometimes it is a reason and in this case, could be considered the glorifying of God. You may not like it, and try to demean it, but it is one of the few privileges even the liberal government can’t stop. And rulers have been trying for a couple of thousand years. So you’re in notorious company.

Now about that kneeling when the National Anthem is being played, what is this kneeling supposed to represent?

I can tell you what it doesn't mean, it doesn't mean respect for the flag and what is symbolizes because the normative, cultural and patriotic posture should be standing at attention with or without your hand over your heart and men with their hats removed or saluting if there uniform requires a hat. You can sing along if you wish but this is not required. This is an accepted American cultural tradition for a long, long time. This simple posture gives honor to our Republic which is Under God, our founding principles (also from God) and all of the people that have sacrificed their lives, livelihoods, family and such to help create a better country for all. This particular time is not the time to make a political statement about oneself or one's cause de jour.

I’d like to go back to the regular old family, without all the isotopes.

Indeed. Many, if not most isotopes are quite unstable.
