Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested Wednesday that Americans should consider wearing goggles or a face shield in order to prevent spreading or catching COVID-19.
"If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it," the nation's top infectious disease expert told ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton during an Instagram Live conversation on ABC News.
When asked if we're going to get to a point where eye protection is recommended, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases responded, "It might, if you really want perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces."
"You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye," he continued. "Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it."
He noted that googles and eye or face shields are "not universally recommended" at this time, "but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can."

Fauci looks ahead to flu season
As the summer transitions into the fall, Fauci also discussed the oncoming flu season.
Fauci said he hopes wearing masks will help limit the spread of influenza as well.
"It is inevitable that we're going to have some degree of flu," he said. "I'm hoping that the wearing of masks and other coverings are going to not only protect us against COVID-19, but also help protect us against influenza."
"Go out there and get your flu shot when the flu vaccine becomes available," he urged.

1. First, Fauci was against people wearing masks; then he was for it (as if the nature of ANY disease forces one to change the recommendation); now he’s not only pro-mask, but pro-faceshield - so does that mean that the masks aren’t quite so effective as he’s been making them out to be?

Flu vaccines are so good that they make all vaccine manufacturers immune from lawsuits from any damages the vaccines may cause.
Nope. If people really want to protect themselves against smaller virus particles eye protection is essential. Which is one big reason this whole face covering debate is ridiculous.
It is also the reason we are told homemade masks are about “source control” and not about protection from the virus.
The assumption being you are a hotbed of the virus even when you have never been exposed, have no symptoms, and follow all other protocols for infection control. They have no proof to back this up but hey public shaming is as good as a peer review random controlled trial, right?

Since the mask mandate went into place here in Illinois, I have been driving 40 miles to Iowa to shop without a mask (skipping Walmart now). A friend asked me, “What’s the big deal about a mask? It shows you care!” I said the mask was a gateway to more restrictions. I then told him the virus can enter through the eyes, so how would he feel about a goggle mandate? He said I was being reactionary and silly. I think I’ll send him a link to this story!
