Huge crowds have gathered for the first Friday prayers at Istanbul's Hagia Sophia since Turkey's President Erdogan sparked Christian anger by reconverting it into a mosque. The Friday prayers, which are the first in 86 years at the structure, saw thousands of worshippers travel across Turkey to join today's ceremony. Mr Erdogan himself is scheduled to attend alongside 500 dignitaries as he fulfils what he has described as the 'dream of our youth' anchored in Turkey's Islamic movement.

The Muslims there must be disappointed that this time they dont have available Christians to murder, rape, enslave and castrate. Oh well, they can dream of future opportunities further west.

You didn’t build that.
Turkey had the opportunity to join the modern world. Instead, it chose to go back to 632 and become a backward, fanatical theocracy.
Erdogan Wants to be the next Sultan of Jihad.
They are licking their chops for Rome.
While my opening seems a diversion, read on and read past the opening to fully get what I am saying.
I have really never understood, nor had any respect for, the idea that G-d has special human built places where it is special - in your relationship with G-d - to worship there.
That is not to say I cannot appreciate great architectural accomplishments as just that in their own right.
I have assisted others in respecting such things, helping out of town Catholic friends pay a special visit to St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, when they insisted the visit had to be for attending Mass there, not just for seeing the place inside. I graciously declined as I could not go along with the necessity of the sentiment.
I view G-d as “at home” in G-d’s personal relationship with us, not in any building.
I think G-d was “at home” with Abraham, long before Solomon built a temple.
We should not worship buildings. They are just like idols - made to be a form of a “graven image” of our relationship with G-d.
HOWEVER - I do understand the issue at hand is none of that, but is instead about the Islamic fundamentalist Erdogan extending what he thinks is further and continued humiliation of Christians.
How should Christians in Turkey respond?
Quit having church in their buildings. Start making their Christian services very large outdoor affairs. Don’t let Erdogan’s actions make Christians cower even more, when instead they should publicly cower even less.
Unless I am mistaken, Constantine built Hagia Sophia. The Turks captured Constantinople but the Christians continued for many years with the Hagia Sophia as a Christian church. At some point the Turks took it over but held it as a museum until not.
I know for a fact that Turkish muslims in this country are celebrating this in a HUGE way. Otherwise known as “sleeper cells.”
The current Pope is anxious to help them.
Umm, no. The Ottomans made it a mosque after the fall in 1453. It was a mosque for almost 500 years.
Unless I am mistaken, Constantine built Hagia Sophia.
You are correct. I will write “Justinian built the Hagia Sophia” 100 times on the black board after school.
