Association of country-wide coronavirus mortality with demographics, testing, lockdowns, and public wearing of masks.

Abstract:

There is wide variation between countries in per-capita mortality from COVID-19 (caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus). Determinants of this variation are not fully understood. Methods. Potential predictors of per-capita coronavirus-related mortality in 198 countries were examined, including age, sex ratio, obesity prevalence, temperature, urbanization, smoking, duration of infection, lockdowns, viral testing, contact tracing policies, and public mask-wearing norms and policies. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed. Results. In univariate analyses, the prevalence of smoking, per-capita gross domestic product, urbanization, and colder average country temperature were positively associated with coronavirus-related mortality. In a multivariable analysis of 194 countries, the duration of infection in the country, and the proportion of the population 60 years of age or older were positively associated with per-capita mortality, while duration of mask-wearing by the public was negatively associated with mortality (all p<0.001). The prevalence of obesity was independently associated with mortality in models which controlled for testing levels or policy. International travel restrictions were independently associated with lower per-capita mortality, but other containment measures and viral testing and tracing policies were not. In countries with cultural norms or government policies supporting public mask-wearing, per-capita coronavirus mortality increased on average by just 7.2% each week, as compared with 55.0% each week in remaining countries. On multivariable analysis, lockdowns tended to be associated with less mortality (p=0.41), and increased per-capita testing with higher reported mortality (p=0.55), though neither association was statistically significant. Conclusions. Societal norms and government policies supporting the wearing of masks by the public, as well as international travel controls, are independently associated with lower per-capita mortality from COVID-19.

This study is apparently the basis for all of the projections that say masks make a difference. But, right at the outset, it begins by equating mask usage versus mortality set in April which is when New York was busy killing people by exposure in Nursing homes and such.

So many of these studies that undergird these international models are so very flawed and then are held out as ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Arrg.

Ironically, this confirms the thinking person’s view that we can’t trust what we’re hearing about this Chinese virus.

When most of those studies that promote masks are read it turns out that mask either means a surgical mask or a homemade mask of specific fit, material, and layers. Not just any old face coverings. Also none of the studies I’ve read consider masks (even surgical) as a stand alone way to prevent the spread.

There is also the issue that some studies on human behavior show that people are likely to increase other risky behaviors when they believe another risk associated with a certain activity have been eliminated. A sick person may decide that since her face covering means she no longer a source for the virus it is o.k. to forego other precautions such as self isolating or keeping away from high risk individuals.

And I’d rather be able to see a stranger’s face. Less likelyhood of nasty surprises.

“In countries with cultural norms or government policies supporting public mask-wearing, per-capita coronavirus mortality increased on average by just 7.2% each week, as compared with 55.0% each week in remaining countries.”

For those countries with the 7.2% increase each week. Did the virus show a steady decrease or did it simply reach a plateau? If it was a plateau how long did it last? Did mask wearing reduce the mortality of high risk groups?

For those countries with the 55% increase. Was that a peak number? Did mortality rates start to go down after that? If there was a decrease was it a steady one or did it too plateau out? If so, for how long? How did the mortality rate for high risk population compare to that of where mask wearing is the norm?

How far apart was the final death count?

That's a possible confounding factor for the US. What about other countries? Nobody is claiming that any study is "absolute truth".

Conclusive Proof — Masks Do Not Inhibit Viral Spread

https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2020/07/19/are-face-masks-effective.aspx?cid_source=prnl&cid_medium=email&cid_content=art1HL&cid=20200719Z1&mid=DM600350&rid=919913517

Just the facts, ma’am. The video at the link is well worth watching. For all intents, by what is presented here, we should do away with air-conditioning is all public buildings to stop the spread of airborne viruses. Can you imagine governors and mayors ordering that? Not in a million years. They wouldn’t impose that discomfort on themselves.

There are studies with masks alone whether that is considered good or not.

Seems like an important sentence there.

You know it doesn’t. But, there is Dr. Birx using the chart based on this absurd piece of crap (about masks and mortality) as if it is a fact.

Click on my name. The college dorm study has masks, masks plus hand washing and nothing as the three cases.

From a study referenced by a comment on this post's article which is claimed to be "peer-reviewed". There seems to be some benefit to early use of a mask with CV-19. Note these are death rates.

Never been to Asia but pre-pandemic pictures often show a large percentage of people in public wearing masks so in some countries they were protected from day 1 from mass infection rates?

Not all face coverings/masks are created equal.

The box mine come in says not for use in healthcare settings.

The politicization of everything covid was one of the truly bizarre trends this year. Refusing to wear a mask to pwn the libs, and kill your grandma.

I did suspect as much.

The agendas at play with all of this are quite biblical.

Interesting times, to say the least.

Stuff gets crazy right quick when an American President
takes the reins and goes after the human trafficking
pipelines. If you want to know what this is REALLY all
about, just check what gets attacked, banned, quarantined,
or censored the most aggressively.

My Tweet at Allen West the other day for his win and
telling him to “Bring the Storm, Allen! #WWG1WGA, with a
related Meme, got 1000+ likes, along with making
me one of the now shadow banned 150,000 QAnon types at Twitter.

When the PUBLIC at Large finally “Gets It”...
Game Over.
