US President Donald Trump declined to say the Confederate flag was an offensive symbol in an interview broadcast on Sunday, saying it is a source of pride for people who love the South.
The Republican president was asked on Fox News Sunday if the flag, a symbol of US slavery and white supremacy for many Americans, was offensive.
“It depends on who you’re talking about, when you’re talking about,” Trump responded. “When people proudly had their Confederate flags they’re not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South … I say it’s freedom of many things, but it’s freedom of speech.”
Trump has in the past appeared sympathetic to the flag and symbols of the Confederacy of the 1861-65 Civil War.
In 2017, he criticised the removal of monuments to the Confederacy and said there were “very fine people on both sides” of a deadly clash in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.
Earlier this month, he criticised NASCAR’s ban of the Confederate flag from its events.
Breaking with several of his fellow Republicans in Congress, Trump has promised to veto the annual National Defense Authorisation Act over an amendment to remove the names of Confederate generals from military bases within a year.

The resolutions of secession and the words contained within them as the reasons for seceding really happened, as were the stump speeches of the Confederate politicians. Leaves little to the imagination.

90% of American Indians were fine with the name "Redskins" for the Washington team, but it will be changed because of the activists. If the men who were stationed at some point at Fort Bragg or Fort Hood were polled about changing the names, no doubt most of them would want the names to remain as they are, but most of them have passed on. If Trump tries to stop the renaming, the next Democrat President will approve it.

Except that it is you that is engaging in the historical revisionism. I take the Confederate politicians at their word when I read the resolutions of secession they passed as the reasons for leaving the United States that it was about slavery, racism, and white supremacy - it was that way right from the beginning - South Carolina was the first to do so. They said it, no one else. We take them at their word. I take the Confederate politicians’ stump speeches (such as the Cornerstone Speech) that white supremacy / slavery was the basis for the Confederacy’s existence. Again, they said it, not me. I take them at their word and believe they meant what they said. That’s the real history of the Confederacy. Ignoring that reality doesn’t change it. And the Confederate flag obviously represents the Confederacy and what the Confederacy represents. It’s not a “slur” ... it’s just stating the facts.
Here we go again. 4 states issued declarations of causes out of the 12 that seceded. Of those 4, three of them listed causes other than the Northern states’ refusal to enforce the fugitive slave clause of the constitution which was actually unconstitutional. Namely, they were tired of being screwed over economically by the Northern states via high tariffs and unequal government expenditures.
The very first thing the Northern states offered was slavery effectively forever by express constitutional amendment. They passed it through both houses of Congress with the necessary 2/3rds super majority and the president signed it and 5 states ratified it. The original 7 seceding states turned it down.

Which is amazing coming from people who claim to be Conservatives. Without the South, the country would have gone full blown socialist a long time ago.

Generations ago the country came to an understanding. The South was to have its memorials and symbols to honor its soldiers and should not be demonized for such. In return, Southerners have served in the military in numbers far exceeding their % of the population and have been some of THE most patriotic and devoted Americans anywhere. We won 2 world wars and a long Cold War.
Now the Left wants to go back on the deal, endlessly malign all things Southern and spew constant hate at the South, before moving on to trashing the rest of America’s history and culture on the way toward building their Marxist utopia.
We should all look with great suspicion on any “Conservatives” who support this agenda in any way. It is ahistorical and poisonous to the unity of America.
The South is his strongest region. So he should have told his strongest supporters to f’ off and that they are really racists for appreciating a flag they see as representing their heritage? Not bowing to the BLM Marxists’ demands, defending free speech, and refusing to defame Southerners is “clutching to the Confederate flag”? I’m hoping you just read the media headline and not his actual comments, which seem like obvious facts to me.
Aw come on, be fair! Just because they’re the CCP’s version of Pravda doesn’t mean we should be sceptical of what they say!
