The United States has long prided itself as the world's shining beacon. But its current status is a much darker one: the globe's leader in coronavirus cases.
More than 125,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the US, and more than 2.5 million Americans have been infected.
American life has been irrevocably altered by the worst pandemic in a century. And as the country struggles to reopen, cases of Covid-19 have surged again -- this time in young people and in states that had previously avoided the brunt of the virus. Here, in dollars, percentages and most tragically lives, is the pandemic's devastating toll on the US.
The US death toll is more than twice as high as that of the country with the second-highest death rate, Brazil. That South American country has reported more than 57,600 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University's global case count.
Leaders in both countries have continued to downplay the severity of coronavirus. President Donald Trump has refused to wear masks in public, which research has proven can control the spread of the virus, and has encouraged businesses to resume operations against the guidance of health officials who believe premature reopenings could lead to surges in cases like the US is seeing now.
Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro called coronavirus a "little flu" and maintains that an economic shutdown would be worse for the country than the pandemic. He's also eschewed mask and social distancing guidance in public and has been criticized for underreporting coronavirus deaths.
More people are infected with and die from coronavirus in the US than anywhere else in the world.
There are a few explanations for this disproportionate share of cases.

Ain’t it peculiar that there are so few reported cases in RUSSIA and CHINA?
Because we have high dollar amounts to collect for each case and an election to thwart.
Lies, Damned Lies and CNN reporting.
“Could it be that we test for the virus more than anyone else?”
Why, yes, I do believe it could.
Isnt it convenient that testing numbers werent included? In the US, people who die from constipation, hangnail gingivitis, and masturbation blindness are considered Covid deaths.
Remember all the deaths and body incinerator news items in Wuhan?
What percentage was from the virus and what percentage from a low social score?
My thoughts as well, and let us not forget that the U.S. is such a horrible, totalitarian, and racist country that folks from all over the world can’t wait to come here. People who may be carrying the virus.
Also, border states are seeing a massive influx of new cases that are being imported from Mexico.
What a hit piece

You got that right. No fewer than 11 writers contributed. This was a pretty big project, written to frighten and to shame, not to inform. Taking a shot at the idea of America as a beacon just a few days after the 4th of July was the cherry on top.
11 contributors and they never get around to mentioning the deaths per million. The premise of the piece is how the US compares badly with the rest of the world, yet they omit the most informative comparative statistic? Guess that’s because the US falls mid pack when judged by that statistic, faring better than much of Europe and England.
They also leave out the plot of deaths per day with its months-long falling trend line. When it comes to deaths, the media only report the cumulative number which always increases and hides the real arc of the disease, and of course they love to report cases.
The US has 4% of the world’s population but 25% of its confirmed Coronavirus cases due to widespread testing available in the US.
Not enough.
If anyone can confirm or contradict that, with a source reference, I'd appreciate it. If I'm correct a chart showing hospitalizations, percentage of ICU beds occupied by patients under the age of 75 with the known Covid symptoms and positive test results (75 + year old grandpas and grandmas hospitalized for broken hips from falls only to succumb to bacterial petri dish hospitals should not count), etc. would be useful.
Not holding my breath for such data to be made available by "authorities" before November.
Got to love the outright lies coming from CNN. They write about Trump as though they were reporting on Hitler. “Bad guy Trump decides he rather have dead people if it means Americans get jobs.” I mean seriously. These guys are unhinged.
America is a free nation. What they don’t tell you is the UK, Spain, Italy and many other countries have HIGHER death rates than the USA.
Yes, I wonder where Don Lemon rather live. The USA? Or China and India?
bttt
Why can't we just get this civil war started? Let's get it over with!
Let’s look at this realistically. First of all, it is a CNN article. Ordinarily, that should be a red flag raised right there & should be 90% of all that reasonable people need to know.
And you believe that we are NOT under attack from China?
This was deliberate and a conspiracy between China, the DNC, and the Media. Well orchestrated and carried out.
When rule and actions just don’t make sense until you apply this standard.
