Without fanfare, Trump cuts Chinese nationals from American colleges
American Thinker ^ | Andrea Widburg

A friend of mine told me that her daughter, who attends UCLA, will be living at home and taking only online classes in the fall. While the family will be spared the cost of on-campus housing, there is no tuition deduction. On Monday, Harvard announced the same policy. Also on Monday, the Trump administration used the new academic reality as a way to eject Chinese nationals from America.

For several decades now, America’s colleges and universities have been making bank by holding spaces open for foreign nationals, especially Chinese students who are the scions of powerful people in the Communist party. The beauty of these students is that they pay full fare. With them, there are no grants, no in-state discounts, no pesky and inconvenient loans. Instead, it’s cash all the way.

*snip*

Because foreign students, especially the Chinese, are an important funding source for academia, the Trump administration’s announcement on Monday that, if classes go online, foreign students will be denied visas comes as a devastating blow:

Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.

universities have been making bank by holding spaces open for foreign nationals,

Yep, my nephew's acceptance into University of Michigan's med school was delayed a year because of the quota requirements for blacks, hispanics and foreign nationals despite his stellar academics from a private high school and Williams College

A little off topic, but there is no tuition drop "yet" for online courses.

If this trend sticks, some colleges will emerge as having excellent online programs and others will do poorly.

Those doing poorly will cut prices due to market forces.

If their taking classes online then why are they even here?

They could take the same online classes from anywhere in the world. All you need is internet connection.

What’s to stop universities scheduling a compulsory 1 hour per week seminar for foreign students and keeping them enrolled?

American of Chinese descent.

If only all Americans would describe themselves as American first, as you have, we would have more unity and less racism.

First, this is excellent news.

Second, universities need to cut their prices. There are young people who have actually killed themselves because they could not pay off their student loans.

So the cash is all going to administrators while the future of our country is desperate.

Drop?

Ha ha ha!

Saw an article, maybe a post, that had the school imposing a $50 fee for on-line courses (in addition to tuition).

Can't remember, but I'm guessing it was per course.

Probably to cover the loss of revenue for vending machines, parking, whatever.

There are some excellent online STEM courses. For example, MIT Courseware, accessible at

Free MIT online courses.

Lectures, tests, problem sets, all there.

It takes a very disciplined person to self-study those, however. But, it wouldn't surprise me to see a low-cost hybrid program develop where one takes the courses online, but pays for a graded exam and some instructor interaction, culminating in an online certificate which actually means something in terms of the achievement of competence.

That would be significant competition for much of the bricks, mortar, and indoctrination model, which has become insanely expensive. Many 4-year college programs cost as much as a decent starter home.

Perfectly reasonable. If the courses are 100% online, they can be anywhere on the planet with a good internet connection and take the course. No need for the students to be here.

They would be violating their precious lockdown orders and inviting huge liability if someone caught COVID-19 in one of the seminars. Liability is one reason the schools are staying closed to on-campus activities.

“They could take the same online classes from anywhere in the world. All you need is internet connection.”

As the article says, you can’t count on having an internet connection in commie-run China. The heavy censorship may keep students from getting to some or all of the online course material.
