Bartle was an executive with the Kansas City and St. Joe Boy Scout Council and had established the scouting honor society, Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was known as Chief Lone Bear within Mic-O-Say and the nickname "Chief" stuck. He used it for the rest of his life. Since he insisted that the team be named after him, and since the Kansas City Bartles didn't have much of a ring to it, it was decided on "Chiefs".
