Treasure chest hidden in Rocky Mountains finally found

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A bronze chest filled with gold, jewels, and other valuables worth more than $1 million and hidden a decade ago somewhere in the Rocky Mountain wilderness has been found, according to a famed art and antiquities collector who created the treasure hunt.

Forrest Fenn, 89, told the Santa Fe New Mexican on Sunday that a man who did not want his name released — but was from “back East” — located the chest a few days ago and the discovery was confirmed by a photograph the man sent him.

“It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago,” Fenn said in a statement on his website Sunday that still did not reveal the exact location. “I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot.”

When finding valuable stuff, shovel and shut up.

I suspect that more money was made from the sales of the book that cost in terms of the treasure.

“The Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine is, according to legend, a rich gold mine hidden in the southwestern United States. The location is generally believed to be in the Superstition Mountains, near Apache Junction, east of Phoenix, Arizona.”

But is the really big one still out there?

this i bleeive was a ‘treasure hunt’ that some dude put together years ago- I think there are several chests buried- he was a rich dude if I’m recalling he right guy- so it was open to the public to find and keep when they find it- if it’s the same treasure hunt I’m thinking of

I lived in a foster home in Apache Junction back in 1963. Nothing but dirt roads, huge palo verde trees, and some trailers and shacks. It was the best foster home I ever stayed at. Nice folks.

"Now, if only Oak Island can get their act together..."

So that's the odd thing here - there was obviously a massive engineering/construction effort on this island some time before the 1700s - there HAS to be some record of it somewhere.
Several ships and hundreds (thousands?) of men - this would have been capital-intensive. Somebody funded it, so there must be rather large ledger entries associated with a European bank?

My interest dates back to a short story I read about it more than 50 years ago. Baffling.

I hope whoever buried it added another 40% to that for taxes, otherwise it’s not really a $1MM treasure to the finder.

I don't know. I think that the people who searched for this are OWED the name and identity of the person who found this. I mean, was this, in some way, a relative or acquaintance of Fenn? Transparency will allow everyone to know if some sort of inside deal was done or not done.

This is a perfect way to end a hoax. Treasure’s been found folks. Sorry, there are no photos and the finder is going to remain anonymous.

Is that what Walt was doing in the last scene of the last episode, searching for the treasure?
