Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed $14 billion in budget cuts because of the coronavirus, with more than half coming at the expense of public schools that have struggled to teach students remotely since mid-March, when he issued a statewide stay at home order.

This is an old trick, and the Dems seem to get away with it.

You can bet that the budget cuts do not need to come mostly from government schools; however they are visible and perceived needs. Low info voters will read this and react in fear that the little kiddos will suffer. (And, Moms and Dads at home will similarly react in fear that if schools are cut, then THEY will have to work from home w the kiddos, and can't go back to work).

There is a multitude of other choices, but Mister Newsom chooses to try, one suspects, to justify begging for fed $ or increase taxes by fake threats to his own school system.

One note: The Cali public school system could do with a comprehensive audit and a major cut in funding that does not affect education. That is an important, however separate issue.

I’ve yet to hear of any federal, state, or local government “worker” that lost their “job” due to the government covid shutdown. Not one. .....

And you won’t

In New Jersey, all teachers are being paid full till the end of the school year, which is in Mid to late June depending on the district.

If you coached extracurricular sports or activities, you still got your pay, even if your activity didn’t even start. This is basically “extra pay” a teacher or school staff member takes on in addition to their normal pay check. Gov. Murphy signed an order that they all to paid this extra money, even though it isn’t required, since no one is doing any coaching, sports, clubs, etc after school since school is closed.

They did this so the tax payers won’t see millions in surplus in the school budgets and demand property tax adjustments.

Can’t do that

Well California has certainly dug itself into a hole, hasn’t it?

The state is populated by elite millionaires and even billionaires and the poor illegal immigrants.

And the poor middle class taxpayers who are stuck in the middle. I wonder how many of these people are left. Probably not many.

Now, I hate illegal immigration.

But the cost of fruit and vegetables would be a lot higher were it not for them.

They work for lower than minimum wage and send a lot of money back home, in Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America.

But let’s put it to the test. Let’s issue a country-wide plea, an urgent plea because the time for planting is now or maybe even earlier; as I live in Canada, I’m not familiar with California’s growing season.

The plea would ask for people to work in the fields, planting and tending to them during the growing season, then harvesting them at the end of the season.

I really hope that it will work. Maybe, in light of the coronavirus, people who’ve lost their jobs will respond!

I’ll call the President’s office tomorrow and leave a comment suggesting just that.

with more than half coming at the expense of public schools

But none at the expense of the bullet train, right?

I see the plan - use the kids to put pressure on the president for a bailout. Uh huh. These people are disgusting.

According to the below website, spending on education is 14.5% of California's total budget, but education will make up 50% of Newsom's proposed cuts.

But remember, all’s fair when you have an election coming up fast. They face the challenge of defeating a probably unstoppable President with a very weak challenger who makes all sorts of gaffes and blunders and who apparently doesn’t even know where the camera is.

Good luck, Dems. You’re gonna need it.

will be interesting to see how that plays out as the governor said we will reopen schools in July. of course the teachers unions will never permit that.

So let's see... about $7 billion cut from $84 billion so about what they got in 2018 isn't enough in 2021.

Give me a break. I don't miss California's wasteful spending.

I think closing the schools is a good idea. They could then cut the number of teachers by over 50% if one teacher could lecture a thousand over the internet

Newsome won’t cut pensions, because he would have to go to the courts - but like most states, it’s the fat pensions that are killing them.

Forbes just published an article entitled: "Why California Is In Trouble – 340,000 Public Employees With $100,000+ Paychecks Cost Taxpayers $45 Billion". Article is here.

Maybe they should look into that as well.

I’m in CA, with two teens in a public “good” high school. Since March 16th, teachers have indeed been posting an assignment or two ONCE A WEEK and calling it a day. They also waited a week to start this, still had a “spring break” and are ending school a week early (no attempt at any final exams). They also switched to pass/no pass, disappointing my daughter who had all As (my son had no complaints :)

And now are threatening more of the same for the fall.

I’ve had it with the leftist indoctrination that got worse every year, and now this flat out lack of instruction and not caring.

Yesterday I contacted a nearby small Christian high school and applied for my kids to attend in the fall. The classes look good, I can afford it, it’s Christian, it’s likely not leftist, and it’s smaller and so can likely cope better with any “pandemic modifications” needed in the fall.

I’ve noticed the smaller private K-12 and universities are planning to open in person in the fall, while the large public institutions aren’t. My teens wants to stay as far away from “online education” for the rest of their academic careers as possible. It’s subpar.

No wait - let me guess. They closed the schools out of concern about the ControllaVirus but they kept them closed as a political tactic. Yet they kept paying the teachers and staff instead of furloughing them like everybody else. And now they want someone else to bail them out?

Hell no!
