Mexican president says NYT 'lacking in ethics' over coronavirus report

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday The New York Times is a "famous outlet, but lacking in ethics" after the newspaper ran a report detailing disparities between state and federal coronavirus death tallies in the country.

"In this case it's clear they didn't do the work, that they acted in a biased manner, lacking ethics. So let's not allow ourselves to be blindsided, if we don't lie, don't steal and don't betray the people there's nothing to fear, even if it is The New York Times," López Obrador said at his daily press conference.

The Times report cited growing tensions between López Obrador's administration and the Mexico City government, where city officials told the publication that the toll of the virus is being undercounted by the federal government.

López Obrador used part of his two-hour Monday morning press conference to rail against "conventional news media," which he said are in decay, as part of the "crisis of neoliberalism."

The Mexican president called out the Times, along with The Washington Post, the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal as examples of news media "in crisis."

Obrador keeps growing on me, man. Guy just keeps getting better.
Yesterday he trashed Obozo over Fast and Furious and today he is taking on fake news New York Times.
Best President Mexico has had for a long time.

When the Mexicans credibly calls out your most established newspaper for corruption, something is very, very wrong.

This guy encourages his people to violate our borders and take money out of our economy to send back to Mexico. Currently Mexico pulls $22 billion a year out of our economy. And this after getting free health care and free education at the expense of the American taxpayer. If he’s such a great guy why doesn’t he provide bis people with opportunities for a better life in Mexico?

Agree. He seems pragmatic and rational.

He seems like someone Trump could work with.

I thought eventually he backtracked on that, after he and Trump talked.

Actually Obrador has done a heck of a lot more to control illegal immigration from Mexico than any Mexican President in recent history. He cracked down hard on immigrants from other countries using Mexico to sneak into the US after he and Trump signed an agreement.
He also offered Mexican immigration status to people from third countries stuck in Mexico. He put soldiers on Mexico’s southern border to physically stop invading hordes from Guatemala Honduras El Salvador etc etc etc.
And Mexico is not “pulling in” sh*t from the US. Those are monies they worked hard for, illegal immigrants or not. They can send the money to whoever they want.

He only did those things because Trump threatened sanctions on Mexico if they didn’t. And yes, Mexico does pull $22 billion a year out of this nations economy. Do the research on it.

Obrador recently called Mexicans who come here ‘’heroes’’ for taking money out of our economy and sending it back to Mexico. Does he realize that that is basically an admission of failure on his part as far as giving his own people a better life?

Mexican presidents have encouraged their citizens for decades to violate our borders and take money out of our economy. I'm one American who will NEVER forget May 1, 2006 when millions of foreigners, many thousands of them Mexicans marched in the streets of cities all across this nation, waving their damned flag and yelling "Si Se Peudo!'' "Yes We Can''.

Irrespective of why he took action, he still took action to curtail illegal Immigration from Mexico where previous Mexican Presidents had not. That's what counts.

And yes, Mexico does pull $22 billion a year out of this nations economy. Do the research on it.

I'll say the same thing I said in my last post. It's their money. They worked hard for it. They can send it to whoever they want. Mexico is not “pulling it in”. They are sending it.

Those here illegally first of all have no right to be and ergo shouldn’t be allowed to send any money out of here. And why doesn’t Mexico do anything to provide a better life for their own people? And nothing is ‘’irrespective’’ concerning Mexico’s change in immigration polices. They have been arrogantly violating our borders for decades until Trump stopped it.
