WASHINGTON - As Europe and the U.S. loosen their lockdowns against the coronavirus, health experts are expressing growing dread over what they say is an all-but-certain second wave of deaths and infections that could force governments to clamp back down in a drawn-out, two-steps-forward-one-step-back process.
“We’re risking a backslide that will be intolerable,” said Dr. Ian Lipkin of Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity.
Around the world, German authorities began drawing up plans in case of a resurgence of the virus. Experts in Italy urged intensified efforts to identify new victims and trace their contacts. And France, which hasn’t yet eased its lockdown, has already worked up a “reconfinement plan” in the event of a new wave.
“There will be a second wave, but the problem is to which extent. Is it a small wave or a big wave? It’s too early to say,” said Olivier Schwartz, head of the virus unit at France’s Pasteur Institute.
In the U.S., with about half of the states easing their shutdowns to get their economies restarted and cellphone data showing that people are becoming restless and increasingly leaving home, public health authorities are worried.

Impossible to say unless testing really takes off. Right now there have been roughly 1.1 million cases identified in the U.S., less than one-third of one percent of the population. There is no vaccine. What percentage do we need to reach to achieve heard immunity?
Lets start with the presumption this is circulating long before March — I would say November. Lets assume that there was no social distancing (which has been shown to be ineffective at mitigation). There are ample demonstrations of strange illness December, January and February. Then assume that 80 - 90% are asymptomatibn. So lets just say we are off by a factor of 100. That means 50M - 100M cases are resoled with antibodies. That puts us right in the begnining of herd immunity.
I know I made three assumptions, however, we also know common things are common, and this is LRI...which extinguish with the onset of summer weather — we are seeing that in the Southern Tier of states.
Put it all together — I think we are approaching low level herd immunity and favorable climate.
But I am just a dumb anesthesiologist. No doubt I will hear a million statements of what an idiot I am. And that may be true — but I am right an what I have said.

Can you imagine the uproar if they tried to shut things down again?
I have no doubt that there will be a "second wave" of Kung Flu cases. Once people emerge from their germophobic hermit phase and return to normal life, many of them will finally be exposed to the virus. And, given that most flu vaccines are, at best, about 50% effective, even a new "life-saving" vaccine won't help that much.

What I find troubling in this age of Kung Flu is how many younger people have become dictatorial towards older folks regarding this whole thing. I know of at least 2 cases where a person in their mid-to-late 70s has been practically forbidden by their children from leaving their house. Worse yet, the parents are probably in better physical shape than the dictator children!
