Amid the Coronavirus Crisis, Heart and Stroke Patients Go Missing
New York Times ^ | April 25, 2020

Fear of the coronavirus is leading people with life-threatening emergencies, like a heart attack or stroke, to stay home when ordinarily they would have rushed to the emergency room, preliminary research suggests. Without prompt treatment, some patients, like Mr. Virachan, have suffered permanent damage or have died.

Emergency rooms have about half the normal number of patients, and heart and stroke units are nearly empty, according to doctors at many urban medical centers. Some medical experts fear more people are dying from untreated emergencies than from the coronavirus.

A recent paper by cardiologists at nine large medical centers estimated a 38 percent reduction since March 1 in the number patients with serious heart attacks coming in to have urgently needed procedures to open their arteries.

On a recent day at the Cleveland Clinic, there were only seven patients in the 24-bed coronary care unit. Usually the unit is full.

The inpatient stroke unit at Stanford University Medical Center in California usually has 12 to 15 patients, said its director, Dr. Gregory Albers. On one recent day in April, there were none at all, something that had never happened.

Back at the Cleveland Clinic, a man arrived with stroke symptoms on April 15. According to Dr. Thomas Waters, an emergency room physician, the man had waited two days to come in because he was afraid of the coronavirus. There was nothing doctors could do to prevent permanent brain damage.

Yes, but the death certificate will list coronavirus as the cause.

Coronavirus death rates are suspect. MD’s are encouraged to put the virus as the cause of death in cases of heart attack, cancer, etc. as there’s apparently more money handed out with an increase in CV deaths.

Yes, and hospital staff is being fired because there is no work.

Hospitals were ordered to treat ONLY corona cases and to refuse treatment to all others. So people with conditions refused to go to the hospital because they knew they would be left to die so that they could be listed as another covid case to get the numbers up.

Paranoia? I doubt it.

For me, the takeaway from this article is that it is the NYT and not GP.

The whole, “there is something fishy going on here” meme has broken through to the MSM.

And why is there unfounded fear over the coronavirus?

Maybe because the NY Slimes and their other Big Media pals have been hyping the hysteria non-stop for the last 2 months? Scaring the crap out of everyone, deliberately?

Could that have something to do with it?

We are so screwed up at this point it’s almost unimaginable. We have created such hysteria around COVID that everything seems not to matter. Not the economy. Not anybody’s life. No other health matter. It’s just CIVID-19 hysteria 24/7.

Yesterday a large regional medical company announced they are laying off 3,000 people. NOw, why in the world would a large medical company be laying off front line health care workers?

Why? Because nothing else is being done except COVID and there isn’t enough COVID stuff to keep people engaged. And yet, the hysteria continues.

People dying of strokes and heart attacks and cancer? Tough! We don’t want to hear, see, or DO anything that does not contribute to the COVID hysteria! How can the masses be cowed and inder house arrest without the hysteria? How can we beat Orange man unless we totally demolish the country and throw everything into utter chaos?

“Yes, but the death certificate will list coronavirus as the cause.”

Maybe it should be listed as Coronvirus Collateral Damage.

What gets me, my area took one of the Hospitals and dedicated to Cornonavirus, but shut down normal medical procedures at the other Hospitals.

I do not understand that logic at all. They have designated hospital for all suspected Coronavirus patients.

Cuomo on TV along with Bledso doing the chicken little “we are all going to die” routine is scaring the nation. But NY and NYC is not America. Counties next to me have 2 or three or twelve cases. We have 138 and 69 per 100,000 population and we are about 20 miles for a county with 2,500 cases. I hope they stay home. WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE NYC

Don't know why this is happening, but it is true. It's not that people are being misdiagnosed, or turned away when they do show up at the ED. They're just not showing up at Eds in the same numbers.

Clearly, some of this is from people avoiding going to an ED - for fear of Covid, but there are likely other factors as well. Elective cardiovascular procedures have been scaled back dramatically, in an effort to keep people out of the hospital (they are being medically managed as outpatients) - and this contributes somewhat. This doesn't explain, however, why people aren't presenting with acute syndromes (i.e. myocardial infarction and stroke).

There is not. People keep repeating this without any information to back it up, except another freeper who “thinks” its true.

Trust me a covid patient is not going to bring in more insurance money than a bypass patient.

And if the patient is on private insurance...niether has any bearing on what the government “pays.”

People need to learn how insurance and hospitals work.

You are correct. It is 2 fold. Covers the elective surgeries that should have been performed and people die while the state governments get money from the federal government because it was virus related. And who at the end is paying for all of this. You got it! The American people.

in NY, the Cuomo crime family gets a bounty
of $18,000 per person forced into ventilators,
vs. NOTHING for normal patient care.

Hence, the need for millions of unused ventilators,
and the assignment of EVERYONE to “coronavirus infxn”
even if untested.

I’ve been seeking and reading some of the lawsuits. The reasoning used by the courts to uphold whatever order would work exactly the same in a typical flu season, provided the governors call an emergency.

You get less visitation rights in a hospital than in prison.

I know if I thought I was going to die, the last place I would present myself would be to a hospital.

The hysteria fostered by politicians and media over this virus - death rate similar to the flu - is not only destroying our economy, it’s taking lives. People are terrified of normal interactions with others, and those dying of stroke and heart attack avoid seeking care because they’re frightened by a virus about as harmful as the flu, not to mention the pathetic shaming done by the mindless nannies among us who live to scold others.

That is what I can't figure out. We're hearing about people avoiding care out of fear, but how much of that is going on vs. people who are being stalled or delayed by all the closures even if seeking care?
