OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Jay Inslee issued a sweeping statewide stay-at-home order Monday evening to help stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
The emergency proclamation will require people to stay at home for at least two weeks unless it is absolutely necessary to leave for such essentials as groceries or medicine or for an essential job, said a spokesperson for the governor.
It will also require a number of businesses to close that have remained open so far.
Inslee announced the order Monday evening in a statewide televised address. It is similar to stay-home orders issued in other states, including California and Oregon.
The governor's office says the order will build on steps already taken to protect Washingtonians, including the closure of schools, restaurants, entertainment venues and other businesses where people congregate.
"We have been thoughtful and deliberate in making these tough choices," said a spokesperson for the governor.
The order on gatherings and going out is expected to take effect immediately.
The order will close businesses and other public places, with the intention to reduce social interactions where this highly contagious virus can spread. Closings on businesses will happen 48 hours after signing the order.
"This does not mean you can't go outside," Inslee said. "We all just need to practice social distancing of at least six feet to protect ourselves."
The governor’s office will provide guidance on what businesses are essential, building on the federal government’s and California’s definition of essential critical infrastructure workers.
Grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and other thing necessary for continued operations will remain open.
"To be socially irresponsible during these times is to risk the lives of our loved ones," Inslee said. "We want to get back to normal as soon as possible. The fastest way to get back to normal is to hit this hard."

I agree with the stay-at-home order. I just hope it desn’t result with police asking for “papers please.”

The order is patently unconstitutional (”right of assembly”). But it is the right thing to do. If they abuse it (ctacking down on gun clubs but not soccer clubs for example), there would be hell to pay.
A friend who works at Kroger got a letter yesterday (Sunday) from her management confirming her position as a food worker allowing travel to/from the store. (Indiana).

A buddy of mine works for an agribusiness as a soil scientist. He got a letter to show the cops that he works for an essential industry.
Well they gotta stay six feet away,guess they will say,”Could you throw me your License and Registration”;)
I have seen plenty of libs of FB demanding just that. Basically stop every car to determine why they are out.
