The 'Hardball' host made the shock announcement on Monday night, after more than 20 years at the network. MSNBC host Chris Matthews announced his retirement from the network on Monday night after more than 20 years at the left-leaning cable channel.
He will be replaced at 7 p.m. by a rotating group of hosts.
While Matthews was expected to retire in the near future, the sudden announcement comes amid of a series of recent flaps and controversies.
Last Monday, Matthews apologized to Bernie Sanders for comparing his rise in the 2020 campaign to the German invasion of France.
"Let me start with my headline tonight: "I'm retiring," Matthews said. "This is the last Hardball on MSNBC, and obviously this isn't for lack of interest in politics. As you can tell, I've loved every minute of my 20 years as host of Hardball. Every morning I read the papers and I'm gung-ho to get to work. Not many people have had this privilege."
Matthews continued: "I love working with my producers and the discussions we have over how to report the news, and I love having this connection with you, the good people who watch. I've learned who you are, bumping into you on the sidewalk or waiting at an airport and saying hello."
"After a conversation with MSNBC, I decided tonight will be my last Hardball, so let me tell you why," he said. "The younger generation is out there ready to take the reins. We see them in politics, in the media, in fighting for the causes. They have improved the workplace. We're talking about better standards than we grew up with: fair standards."
Matthews signed off after his initial announcement and was replaced on Monday's show by Steve Kornacki.
"Chris Matthews is a giant, he's a legend," Kornacki said. "it's an honor for me to work with him, to sit in for him on occasion. I think you're going to miss him, and I know I'm going to."

It would be a lot more efficient than what we have now.
The accusation was made this past week. She claims she feared retribution until now. Is it part of something bigger? Maybe. But my guess is that he knew more was coming and got out while the gettin was still good.
That explains a lot...

My favorite Chris Matthews moment. Election night 2016, Trump is announced as the winner and in the background, you can hear Chris Matthews saying, “Jesus”.
But Geraldo is one of those who knew Trump well before politics and knows the lies about racism, etc. aren't true. Kind of like The Greatest, who was genuinely fond of Trump.
You have to LOVE how Jesse Watters takes down Geraldo though.
Guess the ‘’tingle’’ is over, huh Chrissy Boy? Well, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
My guess is that it was petty and Chris said he wasn't hanging around for any more of that crap.
I agree. The party’s goal has become to destroy the USA.
They wouldnt even let him do his one last show? Wow.

Yeah. YouTube made sure to pull that clip out of existence.
I remember. I use to think he was somewhat honest.
Living a lie does not wear well on a man. Consumed by the hate he propagated.
Maybe the Maddow guy will quit next.
Well, I’m a woman. And I have always been appreciative of
‘compliments’ received from members of the opposite sex.
A little bit of pleasant flirting, and its subtexts, used to make everyday life more interesting and savory. We are becoming an absolutely boring, vapid, sterile and tyrannical culture.
When people are insulting toward one another, it’s another matter. But I don’t think we should ruin a man for a little flirting, or ruin everything between the sexes just because many women in the workplace are so damn insecure and unable to intelligently protect themselves - or because a very FEW men are absolutely obnoxious.
It’s hilarious to me that so many women who are braying about their ‘strength’ and ‘power’ jump at the first opportunity to ask for protection as a somehow ‘entitled species’.
They should try being MEN, sometime. It would be an eye-opener.
