DHS will no longer let New Yorkers enroll in several programs intended to expedite international travel, in response to a recently-enacted state "sanctuary" law which limits DHS' access to state driver's license records.
The unprecedented suspension, which will shutter several programs that allow people to breeze through security lines in exchange for having their information pre-vetted, comes a day after President Donald Trump used his State of the Union address in part to blast sanctuary cities, saying "there are many cities in America where radical politicians have chosen to provide sanctuary for these criminal illegal aliens," and suggesting that localities that block the release of information allow "dangerous criminal aliens to prey upon the public, instead of handing them over to ICE to be safely removed."

Nationwide.
It needs to be nationwide.
It is a national security issue. a border control issue.
People who were NEVER going to vote for Trump in the November election are going to vote for him even less, all while having The Sadz over having to stand in line with the peasants again.
Interesting. I have a Global Entry card. I was not too crazy about the idea of having to voluntarily hand over information to the Federal Government and be subjected to a face to face interview (which was not actually very invasive) - but at the time I got it the hassle and wait times to clear security at airports was getting to be outrageous, and I was traveling a lot. Plus I figured they already had or could obtain most of the information they were asking for - fingerprints, criminal background check, passport information etc. So I did it.
This is an interesting exercise of executive control over agencies. New York wants to blur the lines of citizenship/legal residents, so the CBP curbs the ability of New Yorkers the privilege of applying for special access reserved for citizens and legal residents. Seems legitimate and fair, even if it is also punitive.
Getting exactly what you asked for and hating every minute of it.
Makes me dislike my current resident state even more.
I long for the day I have the ability to leave ny.
Immigration is the issue that makes successful politicians.
New York and then California and other sanctuary states.
Agree
I said when NY pulled this crap of not sharing DMV records the the feds could make it hard at the Canadian border crossings especially. Each vehicle with NY tags should be pulled into secondary screening because CBP cant pull up info on the vehicle and occupants.
Too bad we don’t have states with guts.
NY NJ CA IL and a few others don’t honor other states concealed carry permits.
Maybe states shouldn’t honor those states drivers or marriage etc licenses.
When NY & CA were ‘leading the way’ with same sex marriage, states weren’t allowed to reject them.
How is that different from them not recognizing my CC permit?
I am still waiting for PDJT to fulfill his campaign promise of 1 CC good Nationwide....(I know)
I doubt Canada will care.
But re-entry might be an issue since the US clearly does care.
Most everybody that wants Global Entry has it. This doesn’t seem like it will be a game changer.
“DHS will no longer let New Yorkers enroll in several programs...”
Heck...don’t just stop current enrollment, revoke existing permits.
May not just be with this program.
Is NYS disallowing access for other federal agencies as well? Say the DOT, for example.
If so, even more problem soon to arise.
If not, why prohibit access by DHS but not other agencies.
What a cluster.
Thanks, Albany. Guess taxpayers still ain’t fleeing the state fast enough for you.
If, because DHS is no longer allowed access that means periodic checks can no longer be done, then the restriction should apply to current enrollees as well.
My thinking exactly.
