Gov. Gavin Newsom is on a weeklong statewide tour promoting his billion-dollar effort to tackle the homeless crisis in California.

The governor signed an emergency order last week and plans on distributing one hundred FEMA trailers throughout the state.

Touting his effort, the governor’s office highlighted a fleet of trailers that were on their way to a vacant lot in Oakland on Wednesday. The trailers will provide services and shelter to homeless people.

The main problem with most homeless people isn’t that they don’t have homes.

right

I worked in a state run hospital (1960's) which was shut down, releasing these people on to the street.

the hospital was clean and civil; most importantly the residents got necessary medication and health care.    it was a locked ward with privileges for those who earned them. no drugs or alcohol allowed.

bad mistake to close them

Can I get one of those? I would just back up to it, hook it up, and drive it back home to Alabama. Bet they would never miss it.

The reason for homelessness is, with some exceptions, not because of a lack of homes.

It is due to addiction and insanity.

When we think of the Left as being a disease, we need of that disease as a kind of permanent immaturity...to think of it as a decision (usually the result of brainwashing) to remain childlike in one's understanding of life.

It seems that wisdom (or lack thereof) of the people on the Left is limited to a superficial understanding of life and reality. When they dig down, they see the real reasons for life's problems is complicated. And the solutions to those problems always requires maturity and self-discipline both on the part of those understanding the problems and those afflicted by them.

And when they begin to understand the complicated things, they begin to move away from the Left.

In fact, you might say that coming to an understanding of the complications of REAL life is very much akin to being "mugged by reality." The result is a reduction in idealism and an increase in conservatism.

the unit will be uninhabitable in about two years,

I'd give it a month before it becomes uninhabitable.

Why not just put up Army tents, a mess hall, latrine etc.?

If true, looks like CA is being bailed out again. Under a conservative leader... more bail outs.

“... after Hurricane Katrina, the FEMA folks bought thousands of these...”

IIRC, FEMA paid around $75K each for them, and people were outraged. The FEMA trailers are NOT like typical 2 or 3 BR mobile homes with amenities. They are tiny, 2 wheeled tin campers, about 80 sq ft.
$75K was enough to buy a 3 BR HOUSE in many major southern cities at that time.

Back in 2015, FEMA said that they were paying near $62,000 for the complete delivery of the unit to x-location. They haven’t said where these trailers are coming from, the contract being used for the hundred, or the quality involved.

Typically if a FEMA officer is put in charge of a purchase order....they will normally pay 200-percent minimum of the actual real cost, but the contract will stipulate immediate delivery for the dealer to get their money.

Yesterday, @CaltransHQ transported trailers to a vacant city-owned lot in Oakland where they will provide services & shelter to those in need.

So you're moving the homeless problem from one place to another place. How is that progress?

The thinking here (I’m assuming) is, it’s better to have them corralled altogether in one big area with porta-potties, than sleeping & pooing on sidewalks in front of businesses all over town.
