Also much of the causes of the fires is the failure of local governments to do control burns of the underbrush to eliminate the fuel that causes these fires.

I am a man-made Climate Change skeptic myself.
But let’s look at this more clearly — were the ORIGINAL Bushfires caused by these arsonists? Or was it caused by the extremely hot weather?
It could be that the original Bushfires were containable but these arsonists actually EXACERBATED the catastrophe by deliberately lighting even more fires.
A couple nights ago, The Weather Channel had some moron on who said the Australian fires proved climate change because their *winter* temperatures were up to 104.
Was one of the human fire starters named Greta?
So, the picture of the charcoal briquet all toasty around the edges is wrong? Someone get grrrrrrreta on the phone STAT!
It is an absurd number. For example, they believe 8000 koalas were directly killed in NSW, which is 30% of the Koala population.
THe 480 million number comes from extrapolation of studies showing how clearing land used by animals would damage the population. In other words, they beleive that many will die from starvation and lack of habitat for long-term survival.
There is also a 1 billion number, which actually includes INSECTS. These estimates include birds, frogs, reptiles, as well as the cute animals we think of.
Farm animals have been killed, a lot of them, when not released before the fires swept through.
BTW, there are 50 million kangaroos, something that until these fires was called a ‘PLAGUE”, as they were destroying everything. Killing half the kangaroos would be good for Australia.
A high proportion of bushfires in Australia are caused by arsonists - that’s true every year. These people are a scourge.
But that still leaves a significant number caused by natural factors and most of the biggest fires did probably start naturally because they generally start in isolated areas which is why nobody gets on top of them before they get out of control.
So yeah - you’re right basically. Most of the fires that started all this are probably natural - but once they start, the crazies come out - and it’s also possible some are being lit deliberately for other reasons - we know terrorists have talked about doing it - they could be. Most perpetrators don’t get caught, so the fact we haven’t caught any doesn’t mean they can’t be out there. Presumably they are doing to be more careful about not being caught that some of the crazies.
