That’s what I figure, not just for Russia but for a lot of people and places. There seems to be a feeling of relief, with just barely any words of chastisement, let alone threats. Wouldn’t surprise me to find out the Macron call was along the lines of “Is he dead? Is he really dead? Putin, please tell me he’s really dead!”

Russia is the primary supplier of arms to Iran. The conflicts promoted by Iran cause other nations in the region to also buy Russian arms.
Their interest is mostly financial with the added benefit of giving them a bigger say over regional affairs due to increased influence with the regime.
With that said, I do not believe Putin has any affection or misconceptions about the mad mullah’s. Putin wants to stop a direct oil pipeline to Europe. That remains his top priority and they have used Iran/Syria to do it while selling them billions of dollars worth of weapons.

This man was not a General in the military. He headed up a 20,000 militia terrorist organization. Iran’s military and QUD militia are completely separate and distinct from one another. Again, he is not a military General.
Russia has wanted access to warm water ports via Iran (Persia) for a looong time. Their other route, through the Bosporus Strait is too easily disrupted. It is a strategic interest for Russia.
