~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona

AZyuma5

Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is a United States Army proving ground and one of the largest military installations in the world. It is a subordinate command of the Army Test and Evaluation Command.

Located in southwestern La Paz County and western Yuma County in southwestern Arizona, U.S., about 30 miles north-east of the city of Yuma, it encompasses 1,307.8 square miles in the northwestern Sonoran Desert.

AZyuma6

The proving ground conducts tests on nearly every weapon in the ground combat arsenal. Nearly all the long-range artillery testing for U.S. ground forces takes place here in an area almost completely removed from urban encroachment and noise concerns.

Restricted airspace controlled by the test center amounts to over 2,000 square miles. Yuma Proving Ground has the longest overland artillery range in the nation, the most highly instrumented helicopter armament test range in the Department of Defense, over 200 miles of improved road courses for testing tracked and wheeled military vehicles, over 600 miles of fiber-optic cable linking test locations, and the most modern mine and demolitions test facility in the western hemisphere.

AZyuma4

In a typical year, over 500,000 artillery, mortar and missile rounds are fired, 36,000 parachute drops take place, 200,000 miles are driven on military vehicles, and over 4,000 air sorties are flown from the proving ground's Laguna Army Airfield.

About 10 percent of the proving ground's workload is training. In a typical year, dozens of units come to the facility for realistic desert training, especially before deploying overseas.

AZyuma3

Of the four extreme natural environments recognized as critical in the testing of military equipment, three fall under the management authority of Yuma Proving Ground. Realistic natural environment testing ensures that American military equipment performs as advertised, wherever deployed around the world.

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

December 17

Lord of the . . . Nails?

Bible in a Year:

It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. Psalm 18:32

I was getting into my car when the glint caught my eye: a nail, embedded in my rear tire’s sidewall. I listened for the telltale whistle of air. Thankfully, the hole was plugged—at least for the moment.

As I drove to a tire store, I wondered: How long has that nail been there? Days? Weeks? How long have I been protected from a threat I didn’t even know existed?

We can sometimes live under the illusion that we’re in control. But that nail reminded me we’re not

But when life feels out of control and unstable, we have a God whose reliability we can trust. In Psalm 18, David praises God for watching over him (vv. 34–35). David confesses, “It is God who arms me with strength. . . . You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way” (vv. 32, 36). In this poem of praise, David celebrates God’s sustaining presence (v. 35).

I personally don’t march into combat like David; I even go out of my way not to take unnecessary risks. Still, my life is often chaotic.

But I can rest in the knowledge that, though God doesn’t promise us protection from all of life’s difficulties, He always knows where I am. He knows where I’m going and what I’ll encounter. And He’s the Lord of it all—even the “nails” of our lives.

Reflect & Pray

When has God protected you from something that you didn’t even know about? How did He watch over your way or help you stay clear of that threat?

Father, help us to remember daily that You know every step we take. Help us to trust in Your provision for every potential problem or sudden setback we face today.

I was there. Yuma, the town, was not close but from my memory there was not much to do in the town anyway. We’d go to the Colorado River when we could. Rent a boat.

Yep. A buddy had a dirt bike and he borrowed another one from a friend in S. Cal. At least the post had a pretty good pool too.

I got into a tiff with the Co Commander. He was miffed at me because he was competing in how much his men could buy U.S. bonds every month. My parents got my extra money and I did not buy the bonds. He made it a public issue with me, in front of the company a number of times. (In my head I would say “Frankly Scarlet I really don’t give a damn”).

I think his buddies in personal wangled my reassignment out of YPG,....... to Europe. Once there I did my own maneuvering and got into NATO (SHAPE) HQ. Quite a change from YPG.

I had a sand paddle on my YZ 400.

Had lots of fun in Glamis and on the Colorado river.

Had fun in Europe too, but love the desert.
